Liver Question
-
I've been working on breeding livers for a little bit now, and only using chestnuts so I can determine whether or not they have DP. This gal came about from a breeding unrelated to my liver program, and yet she's a liver. Her dam doesn't have DP, as she's listed as red roan and has two copies of sooty. Does this mean her sire does carry DP? This is the first liver foal he's thrown. Or does S+ have a different effect than sty?

Sooty + is a darkening gene but it won’t throw liver. Looks like the sire is at least het DP. The red spotiness/dapples are caused by Sooty + on your foal though

Sooty + will cause livers if combined with DP..
The horse needs 3 darkening genes to be considered "Liver".. weather that be 2 sty/+ and 1 DP.. Or 2 DP and 1 sty/+
Given that her great grandsire is liver, then yes, the liver/DP came from Dad
