Breeding Questions!!!
  • I have put several mares into pasture but it told me I only have 1 breedable mare.. why is that? And do they adomatically get bred or do I have to do something? And what is blue papered?
  • 1. Check their ages. If they are only 3 they can't be bred until next breeding season in January.
    2. If they are of breeding age (4 and older), check to see if they were already bred this year. Mares can only be bred once per season, unless you are upgraded to pull eggs (Level 5, I believe) or create embryos (Level 4).
    3. The pastured mares will be automatically bred about the middle of the month, but there is the button to trigger the pasture breeding at your pleasure, once you are able to breed for the season (2nd or 3rd of the month, depending on your upgrade status). Clicking it will breed all the pastured mares. Make sure you have enough HB's to cover the cost.
    4. Once they have three living foals, mares can be papered, if you have the correct upgrade level. This lets you know what their quality is as a brood mare. Starting with the lowest level and ending with the highest, the mare papers are Failed, Yellow, Red, Blue, and *Gold. As you can see, a Blue papered mare is a very good breeder. Mare papering costs 2,500 hb. Foundation mares are generally Yellow or Red papered.

Most lines do not produce Blue mares until relatively high generations, unless the early generations have been boosted. It is generally considered good breeding practice to breed mares and stallions of the same generation together, especially if one of the goals is to continually produce better offspring with every new generation. Horses with mixed generation pedigrees do not sell as well.

  • How old does a stud have to be to breed?
  • Studs must be at least 3.

Horses are breedable until they reach the age of 20.

  • Thank you! I Know this is off topic but I just upgraded to level 5 and was wondering how long that takes to start?
  • I just answered that in your other thread, but if things aren't clear, ask for more info there.

  • Sorry to interrupt, if you have a mare in pasture but not a stallion how do you pick a public stallion? Or does the game find one for you?
  • If the mare is in a pasture, you must put a stallion into the pasture with her OR remove her from the pasture to breed her to a stallion up for public stud. The game does not find stallions for pastured mares.

  • Stonebridge, you have to have your own stallion to put in the pasture with the mares, if there is no stallion in the pasture the mares don't get bred. If you want to use someone else's stallion, the the mare needs to be in your barn. You find stallions available for public stud using the horse search during breeding season (which starts Jan 2 for upgraded memebers and Jan 3 for regular members). If you click the "for breeding" button in the top left status section, you will get horses available for public breeding. I recommend using the other fields of the search to limit the results. You can also sort them by breeding price, which makes finding an affordable stud easy. There will be a "breed to this horse" button at the bottom of the Horse Info tab for a stallion that is up for stud. When you click it, you will get a drop box to choose from all your breedable mares and a place for the foal's name.

  • How many times a season can you breed and how long does season stay open
  • Mares can be bred once a season and stallion 20 times, unless you are upgraded. Then you can pull eggs, create straws, ect. :)
  • Thanks and how do I sell my straws I collect?
  • Actually, stallions can have 50 foals per season, not 20. As for selling straws, the best way would be to advertize on the forum in the Breding Ads and Sales section.

The breeding season is open through the 27th.

  • I bred 11 mares to 3 stallions. Now what would be better? Sell the baby's or keep them and breed them to each other?
  • It depends on your goals. Selling horses is not really a way to get ahead in this game, since there are always more horses to sell than players looking to buy. Many of us are playing to create a line of horses that continues to improve in ability as the generations go by. I'd recommend keeping the best foals, selling the rest, and working on breeding both foundation and lined horses so that you can build sturdy, sound lines.
