Too Light to be Chestnut
-
Anybody got any idea what's going on with my creates this morning? I got a couple that I'd swear have cream, but they don't, and I can't figure out why they're as light as they are.
This one has nd1, but other than that she should be chestnut

And this one is a gold champagne

Both dun and champagne are dilution genes and will lighten a horse's coat color, whether it red or black based.
For the first one, nd1 isn't full dun, but it can cause the coat to be somewhat lighter than normal. In addition, she's an appaloosa, so there's already some varnishing going on as shown by the faint speckles throughout her coat. I expect that the combination is what's causing her to be so light. Ammit has said that the dark shoulder bar on nd1 horses shows what the base coat color would have been without that mutation, so you can see that she would have been darker without it, although even there, the appy varnishing is probably affecting the shade.
The second one is the classic appearance of gold champagne--that is, a chestnut with the champagne dilution. She's also got the champagne amber eye color.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2019-06-10 05:29:22 -
Thanks! I realized after I posted it that it's not that unusual for gold champs to be that light, I'm just used to seeing them darker! And since I don't really do anything with either dun gene I didn't realize they can cause that much lighteningSpiderweb Stables
