To snip or not to snip
  • I just recently bought probably one of the most gorgeous stallions I’ve ever seen,

unfortunately he’s a bit uneven bred and as much as it hurts, I’m debating snipping him and keeping him as a gorgeous show pony. Is there any advantage to snipping him this early, or should I keep him in tact for now? debating pulling a few straws once he turns 3

  • Hmmm...
Id first test him against his sire. Worse than, snip.
If hes AGA, I could see using him for bootstrapping. Maybe use a few even bred, 2g Red papered mares over 10PT on him see if he produces. If he doesn't produce then yes snip and show. Thats what I would do!

And then keep an eye out for other studs like him, im sure theres plenty of well bred 2g studs just like him :)
  • Thank you! I’m sorry this is such a beginner question, but what exactly is bootstrapping? He did test As Good As his sire :)
  • Since he is "mostly" 3rd gen, I would have gelded him since I only keep A papered stallions for 3rd gen. That being said, he's your horse, not mine, so do what you want with him.
  • @Blueboy
Booystrapping is essentially uneven breeding like this boy. Most people use ex perf mares with high PT studs, keep and breed the untested offspring so they get a jump on high PT breeding and showing stock.
With him, based on his PT and papers, thats why Id try him with Blue and Red 2g mares, with at least a 10PT. Should get you a few intact babies. If it doesnt, snip and keep looking! :)
  • thats extremely useful, thank you for explaining!
