Papering Help
-
I focused on breeding a lot of 3rd gen horses this season and realized that 99% of them papered red/b. Should I be getting/aiming for A/Blue papered, or is b/red okay?
-
That depends on your goals. Personally I'm fine with red/B in the third gen, esp if they're from a line that started at yellow/C, though blue/A is preferred, and required in the fourthSpiderweb Stables

The short answer is that it depends.
The longer answer is also... it depends. If you're starting with foundations that are C and yellow-papered, then you can always plan for it to take an extra generation to get A/Blue. However, it's not unrealistic to expect to start seeing A/Blue by that third generation. I mostly start with exceptional foundations (so my foundations are B/Red) and I only keep intact A/Blues in the second generation. It's ultimately up to you and your breeding goals though, and how draconian you can bring yourself to be. -
As said above. it depends on the person. In my barn, a Red/B paper at 3G is an immediate snip but other players don't mind. But i also have an exorbitant amount of breeding horses that i need to have strict criteria in order to keep numbers low. I make no exceptions. And I start with Yellow/C foundations.
This is what i expect paper-wise. All colts MUST test superior to sire as well as the correct paper level. I mostly have Blue/A at 4th gen but with some of my outside boosted lines, i see some gold and star:
Foundation - Yellow/C papered
Second Gen -Red/B papered
Third Gen - Blue/A papered
Fourth Gen - Blue/Gold/A/Star
Fifth Gen+ - Gold/StarBluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

The description Hayes gives above is exactly my future goal for a barn, but my breeding stock is not well enough established to achieve that yet, so I make a number of exceptions each year until the program is strong enough to meet that standard. So as previously mentioned, it depends on the person.Thanked by 1HayesStable

I use to keep and breed whatever passed but found that I was using a lot of pastures just for 1 program but keeping 3rd gen red/B (I mostly breed foundations Red/B with very few Yellow/C programs).. I started doing my lines this way
My yellow/C lines are super strict and go how Hayes states
My Red/B is a little more laxed
Foundation - Red/B
2nd gen - Red/B/Blue/A
3rd gen -Blue/A/Gold/Star
4th gen - Gold/StarThanked by 1HayesStable -
Most of my lines start with C/Yellow.
Foundation: Yellow/C
2nd gen: Red/B
3rd gen: Blue/A
4th gen: Blue/Gold, A/Star (it's possible)
5th gen: Gold/Star -
Mine I do:
Foundation: yellow / C (a few red and B’s but I find them harder to come I my preferred colour without lots of GMT work)
2nd Gen must be at least red/B
3rd Gen red-blue / B- A
4th Gen blue / A
5th Gen blue- gold / A- star
6th Gen+ Gold/ Star
I allow 2 paper levels per generation. Once the higher paper level becomes the majority in a generation I go through and snip the lower of the 2 paper levels I keep per generation.
Stallions must compare superior to their sire. I also go through each sire and only keep the highest paper level colts they have produced and then I nit pick the rest down until I have 3 or less sons.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
@LenasHollywood I started out accepting Red papered 3G mares (Colts still had to paper A and test superior). I used to actually need breeding stock! But several seasons ago i did a mass cull and spayed over 400 mares, most of which were red papered 3G mares lolBluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

So I have a question- when you guys have multiple paper levels in one generation, do you separate them and breed, for example, the red mares to B stallions and the blue mares to A stallions, or do you breed them all to the A stallions?Spiderweb Stables

Even papering and generations tend to yield more intact foals and better papered foals.. one thing that was hard for me to overcome was when a foal was snipped, it was for a reason! It's breeding quality wasn't up to par or superior to their parents.. I always run foals through strict breeding advice before I ever look at their pictures and then I paper and any colt who doesn't test superior to their father, gets manually snipped.. for my yellow/C foundations, if they don't go up a paper level by the next generation, they get snipped.. my red/B foundations, if by 3rd gen they aren't up a paper level, they get snipped.. there's a method to my madness here as to why I do it that way it's hard to explain but I'll try..
Red/B foundations produce 2nd gen B/Red or A/Blue
2nd gen B/Red HAS to produce A/Blue
2nd gen A/Blue CAN produce 3rd gen A/Blue
3rd gen A/Blues from 2nd gens above can be put together in the same pasture while still being even pedigree and parents are still same paper level -
I mostly use pastures to breed and have a lot of mares to stuff in there.
For the lower gens I have 2 pastures per generation but they are organized by genes rather than paper level. My KP pastures that I stick any horses with 2 kit genes or het/homo KP and my Axiom pastures that I have my axiom and Nexus horses in and any other horse left over after I fill my KP.
I also tend to pick the higher papered colt per generation or genes when choosing my herd siresBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
So @Bambi, if you have some second gen mares that are red and some that are blue, do you breed them all to the same A papered studs or do you breed the reds to B's and the blues to A's?
@Bandit it sounds like in that scenario you'd breed them all to A's?Spiderweb Stables

Gotcha. Thanks @Bambi. That's what I've been doing, but I like to hear what more experienced players doSpiderweb Stables

Thank you everybody for the help! So sorry I’m super late to responding to my own post.
There are too many people to respond to individually, but I do think you guys have really helped me see what I want to do for my future lines! I’m definitely going to aim for 3g A/Blues, and be open to both red/blue for my 2g. I really want to strive for quality in any line I start. Thank you everybody.
Bambi, ive gotten to do the same thing too! Such a shame when pretty foals get snipped but that is a good thing to remember, that they got snipped for a reason -
If I have 2 pastures for a given generation, I keep 12 stallions and rotate through them.
3 boys go to 1 pasture, 2nd set of 3 boys go to the 2nd pasture.
I breed by generation, not paper level.
For 4th generation, I use a mix of A/Star stallions in the same pasture, if I happen to have any Star stallions. I have far too few 4th gen golds to do paper breeding. If nothing else, the Star boys still make good damsires.
