Starting over?
-
Anyone else ever feel like auctioning off every horse and starting over? I love D/Ch with a little sooty thrown in but when I finally get a baby that I would keep genetic wise it has a super low PT of like 9.10-9.50 and inconsistent or it got snipped. Did anyone ever have this? What did you do? Feeling kinda frustrated. Tia.

How many gens in are you? I've had a few like that myself with my second generation foals, but after they are breeding age, I've gotten a lot better pt scores. It also helps to start with B/Red papers.
-
Only 2nd gen. I know it should be to have those ok just frustrating since I only have 3 studs for breeding use, all with a pt of 9.90 C to a 10.70 C. And my pasture mares are all a 9.70 C to a 10.40 C, except my 2 weird test mares (7.80 ish) who both threw 10.+ babies. Thinking about just auctioning anything below a 9.9 and give myself a better foundation. I know 2 of my studs are an A & B paper.

Paper scores (yellow red B C etc) tell you breeding ability and PT scores give you a clue about showing ability and roughly how long a horse will train for.
Particularly in foundations showing and breeding abilities are not directly connected. You can have a really low PT horse that throws awesome babies and vice versa.
There’s a higher chance of foals being snipped if the parents breeding ability is farther apart because the foal has to be that much better than the worst parent to be close to or better than the higher parent.
Try matching Yellow mares with C studs, red mares with B studs, blue mares with A studs and gold with star studs. Also put the mares in the pasture for as long as your able (30days is ideal) to better your chances at getting intact foalsBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1Johara -
Ok, that's a little clearer. I had thought there was a correlation between pt and breeding. Everything I have is a foundie except my 2 paper studs. Im working to get a basic so I can figure out some more of this.
-
Should i still clear out anything with a low pt if its not snipped?
-
Not necessarily - many people give them a few breeding seasons to test out their breeding ability - PT only tells about showing capability, but their foals’ average PT can give a hint about their breeding ability.
-
@LenasHollywood thanks. That helps some.

lots of people will cull on AFPT (Average Foal Performance test) by calculating the average scores of a mares foals when shes had 3+ foals (the more foals the more accurate the results)
You add up the PT scores and divide them by the # of foals. Cull the mares with the lowest AFPT.
I personally don't even look at the PT scores of my breeding stock. their scores don't matter quite as much as the pt scores of their foals (as long as there's a few since she could have had a bad year and had a low scoring foal)Post edited by Bandit1119 at 2019-06-20 20:52:57Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes
