Dog advice
  • ok so my girl is very very itchy, she might have fleas. (have already done a flea bath with oatmeal to relive the itching. and a flea treatment) but she just will not stop itching and biting. is there any advice on what to do?

  • The best advice anyone on the internet can give you is to take her to the vet. It could be so many things with so many different treatments, there's just no way to guess

  • She might be embedded with fleas. Here on our ranch we have girl called Kimber. She has the same problem, she is always itching herself. They've (we have family living here) tried everything; flea baths everyday, that flea stuff you put on there backs, medicine even (both oral and outside), pouring flea powder all over their house, spraying, they even called in a dude to spray down the entire house for fleas. Nothing worked when it usually did. Until they took her to the vet and they found out from her x-rays she was embedded with fleas galore. After the visit she was a happy dogo for quite a few months now (5 or 6), but she might be embedded with fleas again cause she's starting to itch herself a lot again. So their probably going to have to take her back for treatment once more.

All in all, best call to make is to take her to the vet like @Natalya1917 said. All sorts of problems could come from this.
  • Have you changed her food recently?
  • Our Jack Russell's would get really red and puffy/itchy during the fall. To the point they were making themselves bleed with all the scratching. We found out that they are allergic to ragweed. If it's not fleas, it could be a possible allergy. We got a prescription medication for our dogs but you need to see a vet for it. I highly recommend a vet to determine the cause and to get proper treatment

  • As others have said, the est advice, to find the source of the itch and proper treatment for it, is a visit to your vet. Good luck. I hope your dog gets some relief quickly.

  • In that case, I agree with some of the above posters, time to call the vet. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
  • Although I do agree with consulting your get I just have to put my 2 cents in. I had the same thing happen to me my 3 year old pitbull started itching and losing her fur 2 winters ago vet said it was allergies to fleas and ticks to we put her on flea and tick meds. Still didn't help I kept taking her back to the vet where he would give her a 40 dollar Allergy shot that wouldn't even last a week and she was back to chewing after 2 years, many sleepless nights from licking and chewing and a few hundred dollars later I have changed her dog food even though she was already on it when she started losing her fur. Alot of dog foods contain dyes along with chicken and beef preservatives which my new vet thinks my pitbull is allergic too. I changed her over to the a Purina One Lamb and Rice 3 months ago and her hair is almost completely grown back! 3 months ago I was ready to do a full panel allergy test which where Im at is anywhere from 200 to 250 dollars. So even though she's been on the same dog food maybe try a different one :)
  • Rutledge has a point, animals can develop allergies even to stuff they've been exposed to and fine with for a long time. I'd talk to my vet about it before I actually changed the food though, if it was me, just because if you change/try too many things at once and she does get better, you won't know what made the difference. It could be something like that, but it could also be something the vet can diagnose in five minutes and tell you what to do, so *shrugs*

  • @Natalya1917 oh I didn't meant to not consult with the vet I was just giving suggestions I did call my vet and ask them what type of dog food would be best to change to and they told me Purina One Lamb and Rice and if it didn't make a difference in 3 months to bring her back they did say not to change to many at once since we wouldn't know what was helping if we did multiples
  • @Rutledge, I didn't think you did! I was just clarifying, for anyone who hasn't dealt with this sort of thing before and maybe wouldn't think of that!

  • She’s been eating this food for a while so she’s never had issues.

  • They also could’ve changed their recipe or ingredient sourcing - I didn’t think of that until now. Definitely worth a conversation with the vet though.
  • I had a dog with a similar problem (vet said she was allergic to fleas) who we had to put on flea medicine.

Just on the subject of allergies, as Rutledge mentioned before, and this applies for humans also, sometimes allergens have a cumulative effect. So you or your dog can be fine with something for many years before the build up of exposure leads to any symptoms developing. For example, my mom never had a reaction to poison ivy until she was in her 50s.

Just to say, even if you haven't changed anything (and like Lena said, that may be hard to tell in itself) there's no way to eliminate these possibilities without a vet visit. Hope that made sense :) May your pup get to feeling better very soon!

  • I have no advice on anything to try besides consulting a vet. I know it’s not cheap, but it could be a quick/easy fix.

I will agree that allergies can come out of nowhere. A year ago I was completely fine drinking coffee. 6 months ago it would give me a slight headache if I had it in the morning, but was fine having it in the afternoon. A month and a half ago It was making me miserable and giving me headaches. So I didn’t have it for a week then tried organic coffee since I thought it might have been something on the coffee (something that worked for my dad), I was miserable for the rest of the day. I did’t drink it again until yesterday when I tried one mouthful, and my tongue started swelling within a minute. I became allergic to coffee within a year, and previously have been fine with it all my life.

I hope you figure out what is making your dog so ichy.
