Breeding advice question
  • Is any foundation horse that passes BA just as good a breeder as a perfect foundation, just not necessarily with as high a PT? Or can they pass BA and still be lower breeding quality than a perfect foundation?
  • Foundations that pass BA are not all at the level of perfect foundations because BA actually lets horses pass that are slightly worse than their parents, or, in this case, the benchmark. If you have access to comparison testing you can always test studs against 'Foundation Horse' to see how they fare.

I've never tried it since I pretty exclusively use RS studs, but I believe this puts them against the benchmark.

  • Ah, I kinda figured as much... I usually stick to RS studs too, but I love the true breeding brown appy as well and I have a stud I'm thinking of gene modifying. So I did the comparison test like you suggested and it came back "about as good as". Is that perfect foundation breeding quality? Thanks!
  • Ohh yes, I have a load of True Breeding Brown Apps as well, can't get enough of them :D

As far as your question, I'll have to do some digging to see if the stats of the benchmark are listed anywhere, I really don't know. :-?

  • Okay, SO! (I tried to source everything :)))

Perfect foundations have 100% breeding ability (x) and paper C/Yellow (x) but it is possible for C-papered foundations to fail SBA (x). Meaning that the lowest C-papered foundies do not meet the benchmark.

So the benchmark is somewhere within the range of a C-papered foundation (? -100%).

I tested this guy (C-papered, not Rank Special) against "Foundation Horse" first and got about as good as. Then I tested him against my Freaky Friday stud who would have 100% breeding ability (if I understand correctly) and also got about as good as. So at the very least the benchmark is within a couple of percentage points of a perfect foundation (I'm not sure what the exact range of comparison testing is).

    Hope this helped :D

  • Sorry, I didn't see this until today... This is very helpful! I'm glad I went ahead and GMT this guy. I was worried it might be a waste if it would be difficult to get intact foals out of him. But over half of his babies passed testing and I didn't even have time to let the mares get the pasture boost. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into answering my question. I really appreciate it!
