Anybody Else Keep Reptiles Or Fish?
-
I’m sure this is a shot in the dark but figured why not ask! I’d love to meet other reptile keepers. My current reptile room consists of three crested geckos, one leopard gecko, and one ball python! I’m so excited to expand more and I know I’ll end up with more snakes.. I got my first boy about two weeks ago and I’m already hooked. :))
I also keep fish and would love to meet other fish people! I currently have two fancy Oranda goldfish in a 40 gallon. I used to keep and breed koi halfmoon and plakat betta fish (imported from Thailand or other breeders across the US.. the most stressful process a fish keeper can go through!) but fell out of Bettas and wanted something new. If you keep any cool pets I’d love to hear about them!Post edited by BlueBoy at 2019-06-26 20:45:37 -
I grew up with koi and I’m getting into breeding ball pythons :) what type of Ball do you have?
-
I have a 55 gallon tank of shubunkin goldfish. I used to keep bettas and always wanted to breed them but I just never got around to getting the setup I would need. Lately I've been thinking it would be awesome to get an aquaponics system set up with some tilapia.
-
I love goldfish and Plakat Betta! However at the moment we have 3 Pictus cats and a Redtail shark in a 40 gal and a Black Rhom Piranha in a 120 gal
-
I'm thinking about setting up a small indoor aquaponics system! I'm thinking a 20 gal with guppies and some greens and herbs, something I can do in my kitchen window.Spiderweb Stables

Natalya, that sounds great! I'd love to hear how it goes. :)

It's been awhile since we owned any fish but we once had 1 Oscar, a male and female Betta (from Walmart of course :)) , a crab, 3 guppies, and a big allege fish. My dad wanted to get one of those big 150 gallon tanks at Petco and fill it up with glowfish and all sorts of pretty and cool glow in the dark things, but that's impossible now.
But I also once had 6 budgies. First two were Snowflake (girl) and Tweeter's (boy). Tweeter's died out of the blue sadly, then we moved and Snowflake needed a buddy. So we got Jewel (who turned out to be a guy) and Popeye (who turned out to be a girl). Lol. They were kissing each other at the store so we caved in haha! They started ganging up on Snowflake so we went and got Zombie (boy). Everything was fine until my dog Toby ate Snowflake alive when we went shopping. I still have the pictures of all that was left of her (just feathers). In an attempt to make me happy again my mom got Snowfrost (girl). (I was going to name her different but she died before I could so her named stayed.) Snowfrost and Zombie died 3 or 4 days later because I had an air freshener on high in a tiny trailer. I'm still upset that I didn't research on things that can kill a budgie on the internet even though we got a big book on how to take care of a budgie and I've read the whole thing more than 5 times to be safe. Then we moved again into a house finally. Jewel and Popeye lived for quite some time before out of the blue Jewel died. We were soooo careful about their health. They had bird protection, nice clean water, lots and lots of budgie food, cuttle bone, mineral block, LOTS of toys (you could say I spoiled them), and a big decent sized cage. We think what happened is he got bit by a Black Widow. We couldn't see or think of anything else. Then Popeye died 5 or 6 months later (we think it was due to depression, which I blame myself for). I just couldn't get myself to get another cause I was in so much pain for losing so many, and I regret doing so. But they now have the absolute best life ever I'm sure of it. I miss them so much. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ I've healed back to the point now where I'm ready but I'll only get them if I have a bird aviary. So that way I can get 10 or 15 of them and they will have all the friends in the world and be spoiled rotten when I do!
I also want to get snakes too! My mom and grandpa call me a crazy psychopath! (Well my whole family does!) =)) I really do want a Ball Python, especially a Scaleless Ball Python! They look amazing! Isn't there also a Python called a Fire Ball Python? They look gorgeous!♥️ Other cool ones to have are Hognoses or Corn Snakes! Although I would REALLY like to have a black and white snake! -
I had aquatic turtles when I was younger... Texas Map and Yellow Belly Slider in a 90 gallon with a special basking platform I made to sit on the tank so they had all 90 gallons to swim.
I have had a couple different aquarium setups over the years. 55 gallon with African cichlid mix, 40 gallon with African cichlid Mbuna called Cynotilapia afra "Lions Cove", and most recently a 20 gallon planted tank with tetras.

Hey guys! I can’t respond to everybody’s messages right now but I am so excited to get back to everybody individually later today. it’s so great how many of you responded and keep/want to keep/breed some pretty cool animals!

I currently have a 4 month old Citrus Bearded Dragon named Helios :x i have owmed others before I would love to have a snake but my boyfriend says that's a no go =)) if I knew how to share a picture I would Helios is the absolute cutest thing.
-
I have a small fish tank and want to get a bigger one if I can find space I tried having neons but they always died I have 3 surviving fish all different tiny types that I don't remember what they are except my favorite one is my silver tip tetra and I have a cat fish
-
@RutledgeRanch have you tried Imgur or TinyPic.com? I can hardly understand how imgur works and it's more frustrating than anything. But TinyPic you just go to the site, ask to upload, choose the file (picture), and upload! You might need to enter in some words that asks to make sure your not a bot. But once you have that you just copy the first link and post here and done!

Hahaha! Look at his smile! So adorable! And by the way your gorgeous!♥️

I tried to keep puffer fish for a couple of years, but getting the water right for them as they grew was really tough! They were SO darned cute though! I had Mollies for a while, and a big ole golden algae eater that we named Cranky Bob because whenever the cats would go past the tank he would chase after them!
I have a friend who has bred (for resale as pets): ratties, bearded dragons, several types of geckos, cockatiels, budgies and several larger types of parrots, and corgis, including my boy CH Hot in The City CD, CDX. So I've always had a good source for critters to play with! She once had 80 rats in her basement!

After the aquaponic guppies, the top three on my wishlist are firebelly toads, leopard gekks, and a hognose. I've never had reptiles or amphibians before, as my parents weren't a fan when I was a kid and I'm still a poor millennial, lol, but they are ones that I like that are supposed to be good for beginners, so once I can that's what I want.
@RutledgeRanch I love beardies! Helios is adorbs!
@CLynnRose if I ever get my poop in a group and get it set up I will post pictures!Spiderweb Stables

@RutledgeRanch It's so hard to lose them! I lost my ferrets like four years ago, and I'm still not over it. They were rescues too. The oldest got pancreatic cancer, which is really common for them and at his age we expected something to happen soon. Then after we had to put him down the youngest one got sick, probably so worn down from grief that she couldn't fight off a viral infection and we lost her too. We couldn't really afford more ferrets, so we found the middle one a new home with kids and other weasels. I don't know what happened to her after that, I lost contact with her new people when my phone broke and I lost all my numbers, which drives me and my anxiety nuts, lemme tell you, but hopefully she is/was happy. She'd be getting pretty old herself by now. I miss them like crazy, they were such a ray of sunshine! Ferrets are basically happiness given fur covered form, and are a delight to have if you have the time, space, and resources to take care of them. They're a lot though, more than dogs even.
Awe, I'm sad just thinking about it! I miss their playing and cuddles and kissesSpiderweb Stables

Once upon a time, when my daughter was very young, we had some goldfish. Then she caught a baby sunfish (at least that's what I thought it was) in a pool in the stream that runs down from the lake up the hill. We put it in with the goldfish, until we realized that this wild one thought the goldfish were its lunch. We quickly set it free. :D Reptiles have never been a feature of our menagerie.
Since then, most of the time, our 15 gallon aquarium has been the home of a succession of guinea pigs, all of whom have quickly trained us to bring treats when they begin to squeak at the sound of someone coming in the front door when the grass is growing, or tearing up lettuce for salad or a sandwich, or bringing cut up watermelon to the table. The aquarium, of course, sits in our dining room.
Upstairs, we have 10 gallon aquariums, sometimes with wire toppers to give the home several stories, where gerbils have resided, and currently a hamster. Back in 2005, she decided to try breeding her pair of gerbils, and we were pleased to learn that, unlike hamsters and mice, papa is a nurturing parent. What we hadn't noticed in the gerbil book was the warning that mama would come into heat immediately after the birth of her babies, so we quickly removed papa and all the older brothers into a separate cage. Here's a link to the daily photo journal of the growth of the first litter. We did learn, that the big sisters were also helpful in caring for their younger siblings, too. https://pbase.com/jllewis/gerbils -
Ive had just about all types of fish. Currently have a yellow long fin glowfish tetra and a zebra danio.
I used to have a snapping turtle ( Spike ). Yes he was just the plain snapping not the alligator type. Had him from a hatchling to about 6yrs. When he was itty-bitty I used to hand feed him, that didn't last long lol. At the end of owning him, he was eating like 6 goldfish every couple days. He was a pig but actually had a pretty mellow attitude when well fed. I miss that turtle. I would love to have another one some day. Wish I could now, but my nephew is almost 5..... so I don't see that working to well, lol. -
I kept a few baby painted turtles for a little while once. I was harvesting my potatoes and came upon a nest at the edge of the garden. Horrible thing was the quack grass was growing in on them and it's bad enough when it pierces potatoes. The quack roots had gone right through several of the eggs and a couple of the baby turtles that were fully formed and nearly hatched in their shells. Only four of them weren't pierced through. I thought they were all dead until I lifted one up and it moved! They were very slow and cold but I got them warmed up and inside. I didn't know what to do with them or what they were supposed to do left to themselves. Later I did some research and found out that they often hatch but don't emerge and then over winter that way and come up in the spring. Well it was too late to put them back... and the quack grass would have killed all of them soon where they were anyway. The littlest of the four died the first day, but the rest of them made it. I kept them over the winter and then released them again in the spring.

Hey guys! My apologies for not responding sooner, this game had been out on the back burner due to personal reasons.
Nikkel, Hes a banana and the sweetest thing ever, only about 6 months old. I’ll have to own one of yours if you start selling. What morphs do you plan to breed!
Clynn, I love shubunkins. If you ever set up the tilapia tank, you’ve gotta post pictures! I love bettas but yeah, the setup for them is a lot. Life would have been so much easier if they didn’t need to be separated :))
Bambi, I almost went with piranhas instead of goldfish! I’d love to see pictures of both tanks. Redtail sharks are gorgeous
Natalya, oh my gosh that would be the cutest thing! I kept guppies for a few months once and they are one of my favorite little guys. You’ll have to let us know how that goes- and post pictures!
Wolveven, first of all, a 150 full of glowfish sounds like it would be such a gorgeous tank, Ive never head of that before! Second, I’m so sorry about the budgies. We ran into the same issue with a few parakeets. First the dog, then the air freshener:( I’m so happy to hear that you’re feeling better and if you do set up that aviary I’d love to see. Sounds like birdy heaven! Sounds like you were a terrific owner and cared about them very much. Also, my parents called me a psychopath as well! “No snake ever! What the *beep* is wrong with you?!”
Well I went out, bought one without telling them, and after realizing that it won’t kill them - they’ve warmed up to him :)) Hognoses and cornsnakes are adorable and yes there is a fire morph! If you like that one, I’d suggest a blue eyed lucy. They are *gorgeous*.
Humboldt, I’d love to keep turtles but I don’t have anymore space! African cichlids are such gorgeous fish as well, I bet those tanks were gorgeous. The planted one sounds nice too, just curious- which plants do you keep in there? -
Rutledge,
I cannot get over his smile!! *a million exclamation marks* he is so cute! I love the blue on him. You’re gorgeous as well. Such a cute picture!
Confluence, my father kept those little brackish water puffers while I was growing up and they were always my favorite little guys. Just the cutest little fish ever! I planned on keeping them years back but actually didn’t because of how hard the water seemed to keep up with and keep right. Cranky bob sounds like a nasty neighbor someone might have :)) and wow, your friend sounds like she had her work cut out for her! 80 rats! :-O Sounds like absolute heaven though. She has great taste in animals :)) corgi puppies are so cute!
Gilded, that’s such a cute name. What morph is he? :x
-
SandyCreekAcres, our sugar gliders have trained us to do the same thing! Anytime it’s dark and they see one of us passing, it’s continuous barking until they get a treat. At least they’re cute :))
And wow, I had no idea gerbils were so good with raising their young. I checked out the pictures and they are adorable. I love the fact that the other sisters can take care of the younger.
SheWolfMustang, yeah, you might want to wait until he’s a bit older :)) but he sounded like such a cool animal to keep. 6 goldfish every few days, wow! What size enclosure did you have him in? I’d love to keep turtles If I had room.
Blaze, oh my gosh I love Axolotls! My friend had a tank for them and I could go over to his house and sit and watch them for hours. I’ve heard they’re harder to take care of? What kind of goldfish do you have? -
Loving reading everybody's stories. I used to raise fancy tailed guppies when I was a teenager. Just the ones from Petland so no specific coloring, but they were sure fun to raise. Had a 10gallon for the males and a 10gallon for the females and young. Now...I have chickens and cats :))
-
@BlueBoy awe thank you so much! He is getting brighter with every shed here is a picture we took while outside he will be a bright yellow with blue bars he's shedding so he's not the happiest guy right now lol
-
@BlueBoy yeah, my nephew is an ornery butt, but I love that kid lol. He is just like his dad (my brother) & me growing up, in to everything. So maybe in a couple more years then he can "pet sit" lol. Spike was awesome. I started him in a 20 gal aquarium, which was plenty big enough for a while, I eventually put him in my 60 gal long tank. I used to have my breeding pair of convict cichlids in it. Set it up so he had a "pond" and land. He was a big boy but definitely one of the coolest non-furred pets ever.Post edited by SheWolfMustang27 at 2019-07-02 19:15:52

@Blueboy yea, my dad had all sorts of cool fish tank ideas. The glowing one was his favorite and most wanted though.
I honestly can't wait to get a house with an aviary or get a house and immediately build one. I really do miss hearing their chirping every morning. It's sooooo quiet now. My dogs keep me company well enough but knowing their presence and now that it's gone, I do miss it very much. Especially Snowflake.
And I might have to do that, when I have my own place of course, lol. My mom will kill me otherwise! =)) I also looked up the BEL ball python and YES! Their EXACTLY the white snake that I wanted and saw a year ago! There was also a list of some Ball Python morphs. I LOVE he Axanthic ones!♥️♥️ And the Super Cinnamon Ball Pythons, oh I'm in love! And the Leopard Ball Pythons! I definitely need some when I have my own place! My mom always makes this comment about me and snakes, "I cannot for the life of me figure out why you like snakes." Hahaha, she just doesn't understand their beauty!
@RutledgeRanch aww he's just soo adorable all the time ain't he? Didn't even realize he was going to get blue on him, how lovely!♥️♥️ -
Oh and the Piebald Ball Pythons, the Lightning Ball Pythons, the Jack-O-Lantern Ball Pythons, the Albino Ball Pythons, the Zebra Ball Pythons, the Panda Ball Pythons, I love all the lesser Ball Pythons, such a shame about the spider Ball Pythons and the survival rate being 4 out of 5 and the big neurological problem of "wobbling", the Bumblebee Ball Pythons, the Champagne Ball Pythons, the Chocolate Ball Pythons, the Ghost Ball Pythons, the GHI Ball Pythons, the Ivory Ball Pythons, the Pastel Ball Pythons, the Phantom Ball Pythons, and the Pinstripe Ball Pythons. Oh that's a lot, =)) didn't even realize, hahaha! Well I think everybody gets the picture. I love snakes! Lol!
