Breeding Project Advice?
  • I'm looking for some advice on how you guys go about starting a breeding project.

All of the mares are yellow foundation except one red. I have one B stud and the rest are Cs. If I breed the B stallion to all of the mares, will the yellow mares be more likely to throw show horses? Or will equivalent paper levels give me the best chance for intact foals?

  • You have better luck for intact babies doing yel/c and red/b :)
  • Pastures will help get more intacts from Yellow-B crosses
Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes
  • Going off what Bandit said too, it helps if your mares have been in pasture more thsn 30 days too :)
  • That said, you can still get quite a few intact foals from Yellow/B and Red/C. It's not impossible, just a little harder.

  • I breed B to Yellows and C to Reds all the time in my foundation pasture since I have a mix of both. Mostly C/Yellow, but I do have Bs and Reds. I get intact foals.
  • I know it's a little outside the scope of what you're asking, but do keep in mind that your spayed horses become your show ponies which are really the backbone of your breeding program. In a couple seasons, they'll be bringing in money for you that will actually fund your breeding.

  • Also I've gotten several blue/ A papered foals from B/ yellow crosses, so it's not like it doesn't work fine. But yes, more will get snipped that way
