Whatever suits me at the time ... heh ... right now I have a few named after the prehistoric horse types. I try and name all my foundations so my generation on are a little easier to name :)

Oh boy lol Here we go :)) So because i have over 6000 horses on this server and over 9000 on server 2, i gave up on naming everything.

Here is my system for intact horses:

HS #G ID NUMBER nN

HS- Prefix, stands for HayesStable (On Forest Server, my prefix is AHH for AHayesHorses)

#G - Generation (# is replaced with the number generation the horse is)

ID NUMBER - Self explanatory (Mares get their ID number but keeper studs/colts get a proper name)

nN - I have a "suffix alphabet" that i set up to represent certain genes. lowercase means het for that gene and upper case means hom

Alphabet:
Aa - Nacre
B - Brindle
Cc - Chinchilla
Dd - DP
Ee - Splash 3
Ff - Frame
Gg - Gray
Hh - ND1
Ii - Ice (followed by number)
Jj -
Kk - KP
Ll - Plaid
Mm - Splash M
Nn - Snowflake
Oo - Onyx
Pp - Pearl
Qq - Satin
Rr - Watercolor
Ss - Sooty+
Tt - Thunderstruck
Uu - Mushroom
Vv - Nexus
Ww - Wrong Warp
Xx - Axiom
Yy -
Zz - Tiger Eye

Numbers 1-4, and 10 without an "i" in front, refer to white spotting genes

After 5th gen, i stop tracking generations and horses become show breeders with their generation notated as SB instead of #G

Show ponies are just named HS ID NUMBER

The names of my foundations can come from about anything, and then I really enjoy using the parents' names to name foals, and the link may be very tenuous and like 75% of them are either private jokes or references or both.
Sometimes I try to keep lines in a theme or something. I'm currently naming all my livers after villains. The darker the horse, the 'darker' the villain. So my hom sooty chestnut foundation mares are all Disney or comic book villains, and my livers are Buffy the Vampire Slayer villains or something like that, and I haven't decided where I'm going with black livers yet! Somehow my Fuel to the Fire mares all ended up being sea monsters, so that's a thing now. A lot of the gen 2 livers are getting demon names because one or both parents are Buffy demons!
Though if horses come with names I usually leave them, and I don't try to name all my foundation mares. I do a lot of them though!
