Just heard about those "new" paint mutations. It could be the reason why some obviously splashed white horses test negative for so far known mutations on MITF and PAX3, correct?

That's interesting, and your guess is probably correct. I'd be interested to learn more about it myself.

Given the evidence the high mutation rate of the KIT and MITF (and possibly PAX3) loci, there are probably several other possible splash type white patterns. As to the Sunshine mutation, it is another cream locus (MATP) mutation and seems to act similarly to pearl. MATP is also a fairly common site of mutation as several animal species have albinism due to that gene.Thanked by 1SandyCreekAcres
