So my horse is inbred
  • So I'm wondering how "bad" this is. She's had two or so foals and most are okay, but should I be worried? Is she a horse that should never be bred again?

    Her dam:https://www.allbreedpedigree.com/miss+royal+nite

So on there there's a horse named "Sonny's Royalty". That horse has "Royal Exhibit" in his lineage twice. I don't really know what to think as I'm no expert, but should I still be able to breed my mare? Again I'm probably overreacting, but I love my mare so much, and this has really shaken me up :-S

*sorry I keep making posts about her, it's just nice I guess to have a community of People who know stuff*

  • Inbreeding has no effects on production in this game.
Licensed for Onyx, Watercolor, Plaid, Mushroom, Splash M, Phantom Autumn, Ice 4, Ice 16, and Chinchilla - ID: 256300
  • No It's my horse in real life
  • It's linebreeding and seen a lot in Morgans. There isn't really a problem unless there is a genetic disease. People do this to keep a specific look or trait in the line. I have seen much heavier line breeding than this produce great foals.

  • I am by absolutely no means an expert, but. That really isn't that much inbreeding? I don't know what the norm is for QHs, but I'm used to Arabians, whose pedigrees are freaking rainbow-colored on allbreedpedigree.
(Not that that's a good thing. It's in fact a very bad thing for the breed; I'm just pointing out that most individual animals can be OK with much more inbreeding than that. Like, you should see some purebred dog pedigrees :-O )

Royal Exhibit himself is inbred some, so maybe just avoid stallions descended from him? And it never hurts to make sure a potential mate has a dam line that's pretty different.

I don't know anything about the other factors relating to whether your mare's a good breeding prospect or not; like her conformation, potential market for the foal, performance record, etc. But I don't personally think her inbreeding level is any kind of problem.

For comparison: one of the great Arabian stallions of the 20th century, in the pedigree of a filly I owned at least 4 times.

I don't know any horse-specific resources on this topic, but the Institute of Canine Biology has a lot of general information on inbreeding, pedigree analysis, and the like. Ignore the courses and stuff, there's plenty of excellent free info on there under Blog, Breed Preservation, and Resources.

  • I’d say we’re the wrong crowd to ask - we all have opinions, but (at least most of us) are not professionals in this area. I’d contact someone with more breeding experience, perhaps through the breed registering organization and talk through the situation with them, just to be safe. Maybe they’d recommend some additional genetic testing for her and the stud before breeding. Maybe they’d say dive right in, or maybe they’d say better not to. Just because we might think it is OK wouldn’t save you the heartache and guilt if something went wrong later. There are so many factors to this (as we can tell just with color genetics), so good luck and keep us updated on your interesting journey!

  • Thank you all! I was having a bit of a freak out when I found out, but after looking throughout her pedigree I've found that it's not too bad. The horses I've seen out of Sonny's Royalty and Royal Exhibit are have beautiful conformation and color and plenty of Highlights in their showing careers as well. She's also got an insane amount Sonny Dee Bar, like a lot :)) but I suppose Sonny Dee Bar was extremely influential to the Quarter Horse breed anyway :) And generally speaking she's a great broodmare, she's nice stocky and Foundation built, athletic, bombproof toward any kind of injury or Illness, and almost perfect in that sense lol. The most assuring thing I guess is that I never liked the idea of breeding her to a Quarter Horse or Appaloosa anyway :)) Always liked the idea of breeding her to an Arabian. Again thank you all for your opinions! They've really helped my "breeding journey" with her, and I will keep you all updated :x
  • I agree it's probably best to ask someone in this field for their opinion, especially if you were looking to breed her to other QH's.

However, having grown up riding OTTB's, that does not seem like a concerning amount of inbreeding in her dam-line. It's not uncommon for Thoroughbreds to have some of the big name stallions (Secretariat, Native Dancer, Storm Cat) in their lines 2-3 times just because of how influential they have been to the breed (and how many 100's of offspring each produced). As long as she's healthy/sound and you're cognizant of stallion lines (and their histories) I wouldn't worry too much.
  • There's not enough close DNA to effect her.
I've personally seen "cousins" bred together and the foal is fine.. my OTTB is a perfect example..

  • I see. Thank you!
  • With your horse having QH lines, the only thing I would be concerned is that both lines (your mare and any stallion you pick) be negative for certain diseases that are particular to that breed.
  • @eajames1991 that is definitely true. But I have zero interest in breeding her to a Quarter Horse or Quarter horse based horses :)

@Forestshadow yep! Testing is always important. She's tested negative :x
  • I've seen pedigrees on that site with a rainbow of colors for duplicate ancestors lol. You're good.
