Calling other indecisive people! A few seasons ago I decided I wanted to breed heavy boned black (or black based) appaloosas. The vast majority of my 2nd gens aren't old enough to breed yet. Here's my dilemma. Now I'm in love with black/black based pearl appaloosas. Should I stick with my original plan for a couple more generations, or should I start a collection of expro apps for when pearl shows up in the roving gene sales and just switch then?ID - 251100

Personally, I’d ditch the original plan and switch to pearl. It’s more rewarding when you breed what you *really* want. also, pearl is pretty. lol

You could use what you already have and add the new plan in with your next round of foundations. I started out breeding cremello, palomino, and red duns but a few seasons in decided I want to add a splash, so the new foundations I’m getting have it and I am integrating it that way. Whatever you decide good luck!

I agree with Lena. You could keep what you have and also wait for pearl to come around again. It’ll take some seasons, but then you can outcross them with your original stock! It’ll be easy enough since they’re already black-based.

I’ll probably keep some of my loudly patterned mares and sell the others. My only problem is that I was thinking I wanted to start the pearl line with expro apps, but I only have a few with a black base and it seems like none are ever for sale with the bone I want lolID - 251100

If you don’t want to wait for pearl to come back you can try to start a Line off by breeding a wet and wild stud or a kings ransom stud to true breeding black Mares. I would think so anyway. Y’all can correct me if I’m super off lol

Have you looked at older black pearl appaloosas? Do you still like how they look at 10 years, 15 years old?
I have a ton of black based heavy boned expro appy mares, I use them for my Axiom breeding. Message me, I'd be happy to set you up with a dozen or so.Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)
