In this thread we're talking about where you're from/live and what kinds of horses and disciplines are most common there!
I'll start.
I live in Eastern Iowa, so we're a Big Western Pleasure state. With that being the case, Quarter Horses, Paints, Arabians, and POA's (and any combination of them) are the most common out here. The POA breed was actually started in Iowa. And I'm a big sucker for them :)) Crazy athleticism, Appy spots, a Quarter horse booty, and a cute little pony face, what's not to love? :x
Though Iowa is a dominant WP state, in the particular area where I live there's actually a good lot of eventers as well! I live close to the Catalpa Horse Park that actually hosts USEA events. And if you go out west there'The Maffitt Lake Equestrian center that hosts fancy dressage and three day event shows as well. And of course by far the most popular, the Iowa State fair. The miniature horse show, the Belgian show, Saddleseat, Western pleasure, Trail, Hunter undesaddle, Halter, Dressage, Driving, we've got it all :)
What about you guys?Post edited by NoelMills at 2019-08-11 11:06:45237621 -
I'm right above you! I currently live in eastern Minnesota, and I've ranged from here to South Dakota. We don't have a lot of horse shows around here outside 4H, which has a little of everything but mostly Western stuff. And the MN State Fair is huge, and has pretty much everything. You see a ton of what are called 'grade Quarter Horses', whether that's what they actually are or not. They're kind of just horses. :-?? I did Games- barrel racing, pole bending, that kind of thing. The farther west you get, the more people use their horses to chase cows around lol. My parents were from SD, so obviously we'd use my horses when we had to move our dozen cows. Who rents a stock trailer lol!Spiderweb Stables

I live in rural northern Idaho. The predominant discipline is trail/pleasure riding, especially back country pack trips. That being said, the most common breed is whatever will keep you safe out in the mountains :) You see lots of Appaloosas (originally from the Nez Perce tribe in Idaho), QHs, Paints, and mixed breeds. Theres probably as many or more mules around than there are horses LOL!

Oh and there's the occasional racehorse farm since there's a track in Minneapolis (or somewhere up there, I don't remember). I halterbroke baby Thoroughbred and Quarter horse racehorses (and QH in hand and reining prospects) in middle and high school.Spiderweb Stables

I’m from northern Montana, ther are mostly rodeos, Omoksee’s and a few raining and cutting competitions, I think there’s a race track or two. I haven’t actually done much competition myself since im a pretty new horse owner. I do move lots of cows though, but that’s work not play. There are quite a few ranches up here who use horses for work. Breed wise a pretty much only the people who compete really have registered horses. The purebred horses are quarter horses, paints, with a few thoroughbreds, and Morgens. But most horses are grade with everything under the sun in their breeding. My husbands family ranch horses are quarter horse/plow horse/thoroughbred so massive guys that are a bit heavy footed. My horse is Welsh/Morgen/grade quarter horse.
