    The newsletter email said that the horse created from the link in the newsletter would have 1000 base points and only cost 1hb to create. The horse cost the usual 2500 and only had 250 points.

    You did not have your link activated. It will say in giant letters at the top of the page that you will be getting the special show horse. If it doesn't say that it means the event isn't active and you need to click from the email link. You probably were not logged in when you clicked it.
