What are the advantages, long term?

  • I was breeding my 2nd gens today and I got to pondering this.

What would be better long term, pasture breed or hand breed?

I'm not super strict with my lines, but I do have minimum criteria they must meet. I like bling, but not poor quality bling.

I would like to start seeing all my 4th gen mares paper blue eventually. If any of my current mares paper red, they will be culled. Right now there's not too much I can do about my current lines, since I've tweaked my minimum criteria several times in the past when I was more flexible, but now I am getting strict just because I want to.

I'm not worried about my stallions, they're far more simple to judge on quality with papering and comparing.

  • Hands down pasture if paper scores are more important then money.

  • I'm getting much better foals from my pasture breeding, as long as the mares are in there the 30 days anyway. Those foals go on to paper, on average, higher than my hand bred ones

  • I'm seeing the same thing Kintara is. I'm slowly accumulating more pastures each month so I can take advantage of the breeding bonus more.

  • I really noticed this when a C papered, ordinary create stallion in a pasture gave me an A papered son! He's done it for three years.

  • Okay thanks for the inputs. I guess I'll slowly add pastures in when I find some spare money to do so.
  • Oh my goodness! I've never seen so many intact foals before.

I did get two A papered 2nd gen colts.
  • Is there somewhere on the forums that talks about the benefits of pasture breeding? What is thE bonus? And what are the "best" pasture breeding practices?

  • Thanks Kintara. I didn't see any specifics on the bonus though, just mention of it in that thread, and the other one I found in the announcements. Is it a percentage sort of thing? Still in the training wheels phase here lol.

  • The first bonus is that mares that are left in pastures gain a breeding bonus as long as they remain there. The bonus increases daily, up to 30 days and then stabilizes at that point. (Ammit has never said exactly how much the mare gains each day, and probably won't.) However, removing the mare from the pasture removes the pasture bonus, and they return to their base breeding ability when you do that. Breeding ability is expressed as a percentage. Perfect foundations have 100% breeding ability, which means that they have as high a breeding ability as any normal foundation horse can have. Exceptional producers have breeding abilities up to 104 or 105%. The breeding ability of subsequent generations goes up, hopefully, but those figures are hidden, only to be reflected in the showing and breeding ability of the offspring.

What I have noticed is that my pasture foals generally breeze through showing aptitude, smart mare advice and gelding advice. A fair number still test inconsistent, and a few of the colts will paper C rather than B for foundations. Not all of the B colts comparison test "about the same as" each other, but most of them do. (Most of my pastured horses are foundations.)

The 2nd bonus is helpful if to players who are unable to play regularly for a while. The horses they have in pastures will continue to breed each season and will be sold automatically on the 28th at the end of the game year for 1000hb. This will add income to the stable despite the relative inactivity of the player.

You could also use pastures as an income generator by removing the foals and putting them in the auction, which would make you slightly more money than just leaving them in pasture.

  • This is not actually correct. Breeding ability never changes and the pasture does not alter that. Mares who have been in the pasture are no better then a mare no in the pasture. They get no boost to their breeding ability. Foal ability is an average of the two parents plus a random factor. Mares who are in the pasture have less random factor and tend towards better foals. The foals are no better then you could get from regular breeding but you get high side of random much more regularly.

  • Ahhh ok. And the 30 days? Still in play? Or is pasture breeding, pasture breeding? Really just trying to weigh the benefit of leaving the girls in the pasture, over having them in the barn showing, and then just putting them in pasture the instant I'm ready to breed them.

  • If you leave them in the pasture you will have to cull less foals. If you leave them showing you will get more money from them. It just comes down to where you want to get your money from.

  • Thanks, Ammit, for clearing that up. My understanding was clearly shaky.
