Line breeding?
-
Does anyone breed by generation vs paper level? I want to play with the new rank specials (as well as other RS) by putting them all together in (very small) breeding line for my own personal use. Has anyone done this before? What were your outcomes? And which of the new RS would you use as your stallion? Here's what I got on this account!

I’ve always bred by generations first then if I think about it or have enough pastures to separate by papers.
My problem with Rank specials is that I breed for Grullos and there aren’t any Grullo Rank specials so unless I want to spend 2+ GMTs on each horse to fit them to my goals then I’ll always be breeding lower quality mares (regular grullo herd helpers) to a higher quality stud (Rank special) and getting less intactsBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
I learned my best tricks from Bandit, so I match generations first, then papers. I put my best papered offspring in pastures as they come of age (i.e. had a lot of 2g reds at first, but they're being replaced by blues), so I try to use my highest papered stud for each level in the pasture.
As for which one you want to make your stud, that will largely depend on what you want to breed. A few notes that may help you though:
* The Freaky Friday has two copies of frame, which means every single one of his foals will inherit a copy from him. If you have frame mares in the pasture with him, their foals will have a 50% chance of being lethal/stillborn. If you aim to breed the offspring, all your 2gs by him will have one copy a frame, which means each breeding would have a 25% of lethal white.
* Pearl is gorgeous, but it needs two copies of pearl to show as pearl, and a copy of pearl and a copy of cream to create a pseudo-double dilute. Depending on your mares, you may have a "boring" batch of 2gs, but really awesome 3gs. Nothing wrong with that, just be aware of it.
* The Starry Eyed is an exceptional producer, and the Pretzel Twist is exceptionally perfect. (I sold my Taco and can't remember what they are.) That means they are B-papered while the other (except for maybe the Taco) are C-papered. Not an issue if you're more concerned with matching generations than papers.
Personally, I love me a good blanket app, so I'd use either the Pretzel or the Starry Eyed. But that is 100% personal preference. -
I do both. ALl of my A papered go with Blue papered of the same generation. I mix my lines to get pretty and blingy foals so my KitM line and Watercolor line might mix a little wth my pearls and sabinos, and that's ok as long as the foal is better quality then the parents. My watercolor line I'm pushing quality at every generation so I might only use B/Red papered foundations to have a better chance at getting A/Blue at 4g and 5g.
I know that was probably all over the place but maybe it helped? -
Thank you guys! I'm not really worried about quality if I were to do this, just play! They'd be going in my 10 mare pasture once they hit 2 so I'd have plenty of pasture bonus. The Freaky Friday will stay a mare, I dont want to play with the lethal part of that! I was thinking of leaving the Pretzel as a stud and adding some to him, idk what yet though! I'd have plenty of time :) there isnt any real goal I have in mind yet, just to have fun! I feel like when I started out on my main account I was so focused on breeding even generation and even papers that I lost the fun aspect!Thanked by 1Herzeloyde

Sounds like a very good plan to me. The most important is that it should be fun to play! I do the same myself; toss everything together in my foundation pasture, and see what I get. I get amazing surprises every season.
Edit to say that I usually use my favourite as a stallion, the one with the most interesting genetics in my opinion. And it is good to have at least 2 or more stallions and alternate every season, just to prevent too heavy inbreeding in future generationsPost edited by Herzeloyde at 2019-09-25 17:29:03 -
On my other account I play for fun, I don't even look much at generations and I love some of the outcomes I've gotten!
I'm with Herzeloyde, keep 2 studs at least so you can rotate, that's what I do and each season I have more and more studs coming up that I usually see how the produce via pasture breeding and so far my 3G Blues/A have been super successful our of the 2G Red/B pasture! -
Thank you guys! It'll be a few months for them to age up so I'll collect more as I go! This is my newest account (my main was opened on April 2018 on this server) I cant wait to see what I get!

Also remember this is a game and supposed to be fun.
There are no rules saying you must breed this way.
If you wanted you could throw them all in with a high star stud and start a fancy gene bootstrapping herd.
Or throw them in with a stud with lots of genes and see if you can get foals with a really long colour name.
Or see how many lethal white genes you can get on a horse.
HJ2 has Wreak it Ralph a damage making stud that is producing a whole line of trouble makers all across the game as he has quite a following and everyone wants to see if they can breed the biggest damage maker. That’s not new. When damages first came out here there were quite a few people seeing if they could produce the worst horse on the game. It was a lot harder to make money at that time though so a lot of them stopped after a while.
This game is your game. You play however you want to play. Most likely it’s been done beforeBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genesThanked by 1CircleH
