Liver that looks black?
-
I find this gal to be really interesting, because she's called a Liver Chestnut but she has bay genes and looks black? I'm not very knowledgeable about genetics yet, can anyone offer a good explanation for why she doesn't "look" liver? :) Either way I love her ;;)

She's got both sooty genes and both DP genes (she's homo for both) so she's got every dose of dark to make her look black though she's a very very very dark liver

She’s what we call a black liver. She has 2 copies of sooty and 2 copies of DPLicensed for Onyx, Watercolor, Plaid, Mushroom, Splash M, Phantom Autumn, Ice 4, Ice 16, and Chinchilla - ID: 256300
-
She has all four darkening genes. Two sooty and two DP.
-
As far as the bay genes, they won't actually turn on unless an Extension(E) gene is introduced to her line.
-
Also, the bay/ brown genes don't do anything if they don't have an E (extension, black base) to work on.
Here's some more black livers

I like them with flaxen so you can tell they're chestnut, not black. On some the dapples give them away tooSpiderweb Stables

Wow thanks so much everyone for the explanations! I knew she must be at least het DP because of the liver, but I'm really thrilled to find out that she is hom DP! That means her dam must be het DP too, which I didn't know :D Pretty cool!

Yes! You're totally right, I love the purplish shade on DP bays :D Your filly is gorgeous, congrats :D
I made a big compilation thread about DP a while ago that might help with some examples so you can spot it more easily in the future:

Thanks everyone!
Peachtree thank you for linking your guide, it's really amazing! I've looked through it once before but I need to remember to reference it frequently as I really love dark colors on my ponies. So much to learn!
