Needing Music Suggestions!
-
Hey guys! I'm working on writing a book, and I need music to play while I write, so I figured I'd ask you all! It's for me and my dogs, so I need music suggestions that fit a kinda specific set of requirements. I get distracted by words, so I want something instrumental or in a language I don't speak (ie not English or Spanish. Portuguese and sometimes Italian tend to hijack my attention too). The reason I need to play music at all is my dogs, who think they need to bark at everything they hear outside. Anything too soft, slow, or quiet doesn't cover the outside noise well enough. And it's gotta be on Spotify, I'm not gonna mess with any other platforms when I don't want to be paying attention to it. So far the best I've found is some soundtracks from movies and video games (but a lot tend to dip into that 'too soft or slow' area at irregular intervals) and, oddly, Nordic heavy metal.
So, any suggestions? Any specific soundtracks you guys think would work well?
Also, while I'm at it: Any music suggestions at all? I'm always looking for new things to listen to!Spiderweb Stables

Billy Vaughn? Floyd Cramer? Hurdy-gurdy music? :))
-
I always go for progressive house music when needing to focus! Type it in on YouTube and you can find many progressive house mixes for 1hr/1.5hrs (great to play on a smart TV!), as well as search for progressive house music on spotify and you'll get a list from the grand sound if I remember correctly that is updated weekly.
I really like it and it helps me focus a lot! Its light but also with enough beat to keep you on track/blasting out words.
Let me know what you think of it!HJ1 160524

Blu, have you been talking to my husband? He brings up the hurdy-gurdy at any opportunity and I don't know why!
House, yeah, that's a good idea, I'll look into it! Thanks MS!Spiderweb Stables

If you're into Nordic heavy metal maybe Danheim on Spotify? It's not heavy metal but it is sort of intense instrumental "viking music" :)) I used to listen to a few songs by them when writing.ID: 247225

@peachtree - thank you for this! I am Scandinavian and have been looking for "Viking" things :))
-
Kenny G and David Sanborn’s At Last... The Duets is one of my favorites!
-
I do like Danheim! I found out Nordic metal works for writing because I was looking up Norse/'Viking' things to find songs about Thor, so I actually came at it from that side!Spiderweb Stables

@Natalya, my husband thinks I'm crazy, but I love hurdy-gurdy music! The work that goes into one is crazy! Watching somebody play one and the sounds that they can stroke out of one is amazing.

You know, I don't think I've ever actually listened to one! I am now!Spiderweb Stables

On the weird instruments note, I love ocarinas and penny whistles. I want to learn to play both, which shouldn't be hard, really, since I play fluteSpiderweb Stables

@Bambi Yes! Its such an obscure genre (at least where I am in the deep south lol) but I love the sounds :D
@Natalya Oh that's awesome, learning how to play new instruments sounds like an exciting prospect! Can I ask what you're writing about, or is it under wraps? :)ID: 247225

How about Gershwin? Rhapsody in Blue is my favorite!
-
@Peachtree Nordic music is pretty obscure where I'm at too, and everyone here is Norse/Scandinavian/Swedish/Danish/occasionally Russian or at least German lol. My hubby's a Romanoff.
Aha, well, it's a King Arthur thing, but, like, more queer. And really cheesy romantic, plus epic adventure and whatnot. And I'm aiming for a magical rewriting of history type-thing, the base question being 'What if the Roman Empire never conquered very far north because Merlin saw it coming and prevented it?' so that's requiring a ridiculous amount of research and worldbuilding (and bending of history).
@CLynnRose, I like Gershwin too, but I think his music may be mostly too slow for this particular purpose. I'll try it and see. To link two of these convo threads together, I once heard 'Summertime' on the pennywhistle, which was the beginning of my desire to learn pennywhistle lolSpiderweb Stables

I said don't question it!
I don't have spotify, but try looking up Guren Lagann, the whole soundtrack is wonderful -
What's up with that? People don't know what they're missing out on :P sometimes you just need music that sounds like you're running with a pack of dire wolves through the forest.
Well that sounds absolutely fantastic in every way! But goodness, I can't imagine the amount of research, although I bet it's very interesting! Seriously good luck and power to you, what an awesome project... And let me know when it's published ;)
What inspired you to pick that period of history?

@Peachtree Right! You'd think all these people would be embracing their frostbitten roots, but no, it's all country and top 40.
It's fun, for the most part! The Roman Empire is making my research significantly more difficult though. So much of the cultures that would have existed then were destroyed, subsumed, or over written by Rome, and most of what we 'know' about it is from Roman historians, so... Like the whole thing with the Picts and tattoos. Were the Pictish tribespeople actually covered in blue tattoos? Was it war paint? Or was it completely made up by the Romans to thrill the populace with tales of the savagery of these people they couldn't conquer? We don't know. And then there's the spread of Christianity and how that actively destroyed so much of the religions and culture that existed before. So I frequently seem to do a bunch of research, find no solid answers, and then just make up what I like best anyway. So I will admit that I'm probably skimping on the research a little. I keep meaning to go back and do it, but... Also there's so much magic involved that some things just don't apply evenly
I dunno about 'published', I'm up to precisely one (1) person I'm comfortable showing it to, so...
As far as why Arthurian, I've always loved the whole magic and wizards and dragons and swords and horses thing. Though I came at it with this in a whole roundabout way involving reincarnation and Captain America, but that's a tangentSpiderweb Stables

Also because the Roman Empire was a pretty big turning point in Western history, so I'm curious what the world would have been like if it hadn't really happened. This is one (very fantastical and magic based and therefore not realistic at all) version of that.
But yeah, that means I'm trying to find pre-Roman stuff and build up from there, which is... roughSpiderweb Stables

Recently I've been studying to Vitamin String Quartet. They do lovely classical covers of popular songs my personal favourites so far are the Billy Joel, Queen, Fleetwood Mac & the geek wedding collections. They have a ton of other stuff too (like modern pop hits)

The question was implied! Also I want to add O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. Lots of instrumental but they do have english lyrics in there, though it's old-timey styled for the 30's.... 50's? I need to watch that movie again. Also Band of Brothers soundtrack is great, I just really like epic show's soundtracks.
This sounds like a story I'd love, I've always had those thoughts too of what the lives were like for the germanic/goth/etc tribes of Europe before they were absorbed into Roman rule. Most European descended people are descended from those tribes, knowing what life was like before Romantisizing has always held my interest. I recently watched a documentary on finding ancient burial sites and using the findings to determine what life was like. Apparently wearing jewellery symmetrically was a sign of great wealth (same rings on each finger, number of bangles, earrings etc), which I found interesting.
For your story, go with what you think and what makes sense, the story's world isn't our world if you're adding cool magic/dragons etc. make it your own world and have fun with it as much as you want. Not many people know much about ancient civilizations so not many are gonna question it ;) -
I love O Brother Where Art Thou! And it's soundtrack. Lol, speaking of rewrites of ancient stories... Um, I'm pretty sure it's set in the 20's actually. During the Great Depression. Damn! We're in a tight spot! I actually had to watch that for a music class in college. It was a good class. I brought my dog once.
I'm glad you think it sounds interesting! Yeah, there's just so much we don't know!
Oh, I'm definitely making it my own lol. I want it to have that basis for my own fun! But yeah, I'm going wildly off the rails with it, because why not?
Btw, I came down on the side of 'yes tattoos'. So my Pictish characters have tattoos that are symbolic of tribal affiliation and career/trade, stuff like that.

@Natalya Ah yeah, "history is written by the winners" really sucks for research. That's a really interesting point about the Picts, I'm no history buff so I hadn't heard that one before. It's so sad how many cultures have been lost to time, so many amazing stories and myths and knowledge.
I definitely understand the reserve about sharing :) writing can be so deeply personal its like putting a bit of your heart out there! I have a couple of writing projects I work on occasionally and also only have one person I share with :)) but you got me at queer historical fantasy!
All I remember about Arthurian lore is from high school, but it definitely does have a certain timeless quality that really leaves an impact! Plus the dragons of course :D "reincarnation and Captain America" well now I'm curious!ID: 247225

It does indeed! I learned about the tattoo thing via my brother, who used it in his argument to convince our mom that tattoos aren't a bad thing (we're Scottish, amongst other things, so it was relevant. Kinda.) That wasn't what eventually worked, but I looked into it more after that because I was curious. The Romans also said the Picts were naked, like, all the time though. Which makes no sense in Scotland. So who knows.
Yeah, definitely the 'bit of your heart' thing. Also there may or may not be scenes in there I don't want to run the risk of my mother reading!
But yes, there needs to be more queer things out there! And fantasy is always more fun.
I heard someone describe Steve Rogers and his one man crusade for justice for the whole dang world as "Arthurian", and I says to myself I says "Oh ya, he was totally King Arthur in a past life, yep you betcha," which would make Peggy Carter Queen Guinevere and it kinda spiraled from there. That gave me a loose basis for some characters' personalities, but they've grown far beyond that now.Post edited by Taliesin at 2019-09-27 19:23:57Spiderweb Stables

:)) I didn't either!

@Natalya They must have been very thick skinned if that was the case! Yikes! True, Scotland doesn't exactly have a climate like the Bahamas.
Haha, I get that! Indeed, its definitely a genre that could always use some more content :D
Oh wow, that's a really interesting train of thought, I love hearing what inspires people. Also the mental image of Peggy as Guinevere is A+

Yeah, that's what makes me doubt everything else the Romans said about them lol!
My Guinevere is turning out pretty awesome! She's every bit as much a ruler as Arthur is, but more likely to hit people over the head with a stapler. It works out, because Arthur can go off to lead armies and stuff and leave Guin in charge of everything without too much concern. She probably won't murder any foreign diplomats while he's gone :DPost edited by Taliesin at 2019-09-28 13:25:29Spiderweb Stables

Have you ever listened to Trans-Siberian-Orchestra? They have a handful of songs with lyrics, but most of thier stuff is instrumental.

Yes! I love them! They're pretty firmly slotted in my head as winter/ Christmas music, so I'll start playing them in a month or soSpiderweb Stables

@Natalya also maybe check out Celtic Thunder? I love cleaning to thier music. They do a mix of original songs, covers of older stuff, and instrumental. Some of thier lyrics are in Galic (I think?) as well.
