Genetics help! Ideas
  • So I am going to reach out to all of you for help/ideas. I got lucky the other day and got my first candy pony and this beautiful hom liver boy pictured below. I am still trying to figure out the genetics of this game ( I might be a lost cause trying to lean it). So i am thinking of making him my first GMT project horse or possibly my baroque or bronze stallions.
So my question is what would you do to make him a little more special? As in what genes are favorable if I was to eventually sell straws or his offspring. I know everyone has different taste so shoot to me what you like and why.

While I am at it, how would you go about changing these to liver? Just curious

    Shimmey shake
  • Shimmey Shake is already a liver.

Bronze Dun you would change E to e and I think it would be Liver.

  • For a horse to be liver it has to be red based, so it has to has ee at the start of his genetics, because e results in a red based horse, with red pigment (chestnut). E is a dominant gene, meaning that one copy of it results in a black based horse, with black pigment (so Ee is a black based horse but EE as well).
To be a liver chestnut, it also has to have at least 1 copy of DP, along with two other 'darkening' genes such as sty or S+. Ill find the topic explaining DP in a minute and add the link here. That is what turns a normal dark chestnut into a liver!

With the addition of other genes, other combinations of color can occur. Each part/letter in the genome results in some modification of the horses coat color. You have dominant genes (written as a capital letter), that only need 1 copy to show/express themselves and change the horses color, and recessive genes (written in small letters), that need two copies to show/express themselves and change the horses color.

For example, if we look at the next gene in the genome, the letter A, is the agouti gene. This pushes the black pigment 'away' to the outer points of the horse so on a black based horse (Ee or EE or eE), having one copy of Agouti/A (as it is dominant) will results in a bay horse. You can also have a (if you have two of these your horse stays black, no pigment is pushed away), A+ (also dominant, so one copy will result in a wild bay horse, it is also dominant over A), or At (the 'brown' gene, when you have an Ata, aAt or AtAt it results in a brown horse). When you have a red based horse (ee), all the agouti genes (A, a, A+, At) do not have any effect, as the red based horse does not have any black pigment that can be 'pushed' away.

Unfortunately I dont have time to discuss each gene separately, but I hope to show that the genetics of a horse is made up of different combinations of genes, resulting in a specific color. If you know what each seperate part does, then you can also figure out the full genetics/color of a horse. Most genes show up in the color test, only a few are so called 'hidden' genes, these only express themselves visually on the horse. These genes are Snowflake, Gulastra Plume and Kit Promotor. DP is a hidden gene too, however when a dark chestnut or palomino has DP it changes their color name into liver chestnut or chocolate palomino, therefore having a confirmation that the horse carries DP.

If you look at your horses genome, you can click on every letter that there is and be taken to the genetics guide, with information about what that gene is, what is does and examples of how it expresses.

It can take some time to figure it out, that's true, but it isn't that hard if you get the basics right and understand how it 'works'. I hope this helped a bit in explaining the basics. And, what is also very useful after you've clicked the different letters and read about them is looking at the different horses and their genetic by using the search. All color testable genes can be searched by, so play around with that to help understand the different color combinations!
Oh and dont be afraid to ask questions about anything, we're all more than happy to help out! There are no stupid questions!

Oh and Corona is absolutely right, Shimmey is already a liver. Bronze dun not. However, we know that the Bronze HH is a herd helper that has guaranteed 1 copy of DP. So that part is check on Bronze Dun. However, he is a black based horse (Ee bay), to become a liver chestnut you need to change his copy of E to e, than you'll have a red based horse (ee).

I dont have access to my PC right now so I cannot search for the topics on different genetics, I'll add these later!
However you can search for the DP Codex in the meantime, this is an awesome guide with an in depth explanation how DP works and so many pictures of DP affecting the different coat colors!

  • And for what genes to put on them: I'd play around with the search function first, then you can see all the different combinations of genes and see what you like! Because this game is not about what others like but what you like to breed for, you can play this game however you want!
Especially because there always will be genes that will be popular for a while but then 'die out' again. So go for something you like, there will always be some others who have a similar taste and thus will purchase some straws, I'm sure!

Also look around on the forums in the breeding ads section, many people sell straws from blingy horses, that can also help you determine what you like/think is cool!

But what I breed for myself is DP, Snowflake, GP, KP, preferably with a bit of S+, and some nice KIT genes such as sabino or any of the whites. I also have some nexus, Plaid and ice 1/2/9 fantasy lines that I love.
For me, some bit of white would be really nice on eridium crystal, recently I'm in love again with sabino 2 (nice crisp white flakes), but wM is always nice and spectacular too! Dark coats with a bit of white for contrast, I love it!

For the bronze ages, I'm planning to make my boy GP (changes the color of the tail), but that only works on bay/brown horses so it won't show on livers.
What also would be cool is adding 2 KIT genes, and then 2 copies of KP (hidden gene): that gives white cloudy patches!

Thank you both for the input
