Anybody Here Been Bitten By Insects?
  • So I was just bitten by a Fire ant. It hurt, a lot. Still kinda stings and it's been 10 minutes now. But it's a Fire ant bite so like that's not new.

I also remember the night I was stung by a big 3" scorpion 3 times. Almost brought me to tears. It first stung me on the upper inside of my arm, then it stung me with all it's venom on my jaw, then its stinger was in my thumb on my left hand. Which, when I was doing my research on scorpion stings its extremely rare for them to give up their stinger because that's how they live. So it sucked digging that out. Let just say my entire face was numb, tingling, and aching for hours. That's the thing with scorpion stings, they ach. Really bad. You know when you've been stung by one because it's just aches. You can't help but feel miserable. Don't worry, my mom did call the poison center and asked for what to look for if problems occur. None did but I slept on the couch for a month or two. Lol.

Still to this day we have not found Houdini. Yes we named it. Because we tore apart my whole bed and room looking for it with a black light. Which if you didn't know makes the scorpions glow a bright green. Like a regular glow in the dark stick. Its pretty nifty. It was so weird though because I was sitting in my bed when I saw Houdini. I screamed and Houdini then crawled back under the pillows. Got my grandpa to look with me with the black light. Nothing.

We couldn't believe it. We knew scorpions can move pretty fast but wow. Houdini let us know just how fast. It's like armadillos. You don't realize just how fast they can book it until you've seen them book it. They. Can. Run. Just like scorpions. I've also been woken up by two but luckily they didn't get me. Because scorpions are part of the arachnid family like spiders, they crawl on you like one. And because I have arachnophobia, my brain immediately wakes me up saying there's a spider on me. When in reality it's a scorpion who I hope doesn't sting me. Although I'm sure I'm going to be stung again one day. Life in Texas...

I'm sure I've been stung other times but I can't remember. In all honesty I'm glad I don't. Lol.
  • A wasp flew down my moms shirt once and stung her I don’t think I have ever seen her bail so fast out of the car.

  • My mom got bit by a baby black widow two weeks ago. She would’ve died if it was an adult. She got very lucky. She could barely walk for several days. Terrifying

  • I was stung on the ankle by a red wasp, then three days later stung on the shin by a paper wasp and then a week later stung three times by a yellow jacket. All of them hurt, but the red wasp hurt the most. I've also been stung by a jellyfish (not an insect but still a pest)

  • When I was about 8 years old I got stung on the bottom by a wasp (I sat on it!). Worse than the pain was the fact that my mother pulled my knickers down to look even though we were in front of other people! Totally humiliating.

  • I have been stung by scorpions, several red wasps (over the past 5 years), 18 yellow jackets (all at once), fire ants, and a brown recluse! The price you pay for loving the outdoors :D

Oh and I forgot about the bumble bee I accidentally stepped on as a child.

  • I have been bitten or stung more times than I can count over my lifetime. Hazard of living in the country with many common species of biting/stinging insects. Everything from bees and wasps down to the mosquito.

The worst was as a child when I was swarmed by yellow jackets. I was in one of the barns petting kittens. The flock of sheep ran by over the wood decking outside the barn door. Soon after, my father drove by on an open station tractor. One followed and stung him. When leaving a couple minutes later, I allowed the door (pneumatic spring) to slam which was the final straw.

As I grew up, I learned to coexist (within reason) with the bees/wasps. As long as they don't try to set up a nest where they'll be dangerous, we get along fine. I actually like having a nest of bald faced hornets in the pasture because they eat flies.

I've had some interesting close calls like the time I grabbed the house doorhandle and there was a wasp on the backside. Happily I was able to release before it stung.

I think my most ridiculous bite was an Asian beetle. (appearance similar to a lady beetle) I was working on bread dough and decided I would finish rather than stopping to flick it off. For such a innocuous appearing insect, it packs a decent bite. The minute pirate bug wins for pain produced for size. (We don't have fire ants here or I'm sure they'd win)
  • I've had multiple insect bites/stings as I live in the country, but growing up two bites/stings stand out for me. One was an ambush bug, they live on goldenrod for the most part, but they're really small. This particular one bit me through my fingernail and hurt for the rest of the day. Didn't play with those any more! :D The second one was caused by me being a smartbutt. I was catching Japanese beetles at my grandma's to feed her chickens, got tired of trying to catch them on The plants and started grabbing them out of the air. Worked really well...until I grabbed a baby bumblebee. :))

  • We're also out in the country, and we have little 1" bark scorpions around here (as well as fire ants, of course). I have been stung several times, and for some reason it's ALWAYS on my butt. Had them sneak in the house and hide in my clean pants - BAM. One got on my shoulder somehow and when I brushed it off it landed on my butt - BAM. Accidentally sat down on one that was hiding in the couch - BAM. We spray around our entryways for them, but whatever FIL used to use with that isn't made anymore, so we get one or two a week in the house.

  • I've been stung several times, and I'm sure I've been bitten several times too, but there's only a few that have stuck in my memory after years.

    1. When I was a preteen, I volunteered to help out at an Easter Seal summer camp. I was swimming in the pool and talking to another volunteer, and BAM, got stung in the back by a wasp.

    2. In my late 20s, I was working as a custodian at the air force base where I lived at that time. I went to clean a building, and came out one door, and BAM. I got stung on my wedding ring finger. Man, that finger sure did swell up. My supervisor filed an accident report and told me to keep an eye on it. The swelling eventually went down after several days.

    3. When Ellie was like hmm... a year or 2 years old, she was toddling around outside, and she sat down on top of an ant hill. Poor Ellie had her legs and butt full of ant bites. Luckily, she didn't have any allergic reactions to them. We just had to take care of the bites until they were gone.
  • I live too far north for any of the super scary venomous ones, and I usually manage the "respect them and they'll respect you" version of peaceful interaction with bees and wasps. So not really for me. Just mosquitos.

  • I used to live in Minnesota, being there pretty much guarantees that you'll be bitten by just about anything that flies and/or crawls. Red ants, fire ants, mosquitoes, flies, horseflies, spiders, bees, wasps, you name it. In Arizona, not so much. We've all been bitten by the odd mosquito and my daughter got stung by a little bark scorpion.

  • This is why I prefer to live where it gets too cold for little beasts to survive. Normally just have to deal with mosquitoes and wasps but can normally avoid those.

Although the summer student and I were working on clearing out a garden on her last day and she got stung in the butt when she pulled a plant by a ground nest. Thankfully I didn’t get stung as I was only a foot away and they started swarming so we left that park right quick. A coworker went back and sprayed the garden as the Shea and I were stuck filling out incident reports the rest of the day. She said that was more of a pain than her bottom
