my first gene license
  • I did it. I've held off for months but I GMT'ed my first horse and now have a license for mushroom! Yeehaw!
Does anyone have a mushroom stud I can breed her to this month?
    What was your first license?

    Here's my gal!

I think my first license was either chinchilla or splash M, I don't remember if I GMTed Candy or Aristo first!

  • @gilded and @natalya, how much are your straws? Don't I need a license for Ice though?
Licensed in chinchilla, mushroom & splash M
  • You need a license for some ices, but not the one on Gilded's stud. Provided she's talking about the one I think she is, anyway. Here he is:

  • Mine was Mushroom and its on HJ2
  • aww thank you @Natalya, you're so sweet!

  • @bambi, is the only reason you say foundation because of even/uneven breeding? Maybe I should be more sensitive, but I don't personally care about breeding evenly. If the only downside is a "lopsided" looking pedigree when you click on Family tab, it doesn't bother me. I'd love to see your mushroom stud even if he's not a foundation

  • Unfortunately, any lined mushroom stallions I have are kept in house. When I acquired them, I promised to keep their future foals in my barn and evenly bred.
  • @chesneythecorgi I believe another downside of breeding unevenly is it’s harder to get foals that pass BA/SBA, but I’m not entirely sure. :)

  • But sometimes tgey do.
I'm licensed for Wrong Warp, Axiom blue, Mushroom, Splash M, Plaid and Onyx
  • In order to pass BA or SBA, a foal is compared to both parents. That means that if one parent is significantly worse than the other, which frequently happens in uneven breeding, that parent essentially drags the quality of the foal down and it doesn't pass when compared to the other. This is also why breeding matching paper levels results in more intacts. Yes, sometimes they do pass SBA anyway (esp if the paper levels match even though the gens don't), and sometimes with flying colors, but as most can tell you the ones you like best will always be the ones who don't pass and get snipped lol.

Some also breed only evenly because then you can set a bar for quality improvement in your line- I want them to be papering such-and-such by gen two, such-and-such by gen three, meeting these requirements for the line by this gen, and so on. You can't do that with unevens. This is one way to get your lines producing better show horses faster. If you personally don't care about those kinds of things, then the biggest disadvantage is that your foals and straws if you try to sell them will not sell as well or for as much.

I prefer my horses be bred to matching gen horses when I sell straws that way it doesn't goof up their stats (mostly average foal pt, I don't want my horse's page to suddenly say their AFPT is higher than it really is because somebody used my foundie eggs with gen 6 star studs and got 12 pt foals or something like that) but I don't care if they're breed evenly or whatever down the line from there. I do breed my own evenly though. I like seeing the line progress from the basic foundation level and go up the paper levels and pt scores and get closer and closer to my ideal for the line.

  • I just don't have the numbers to keep paper level AND generation separate. I do breed to matching paper level. Knock on wood, but I have not found my number of intacts vs snips to be dissatisfying. I do realize it puts me at a disadvantage when selling/breeding to others. But I have bought uneven breds so I know I'm not the only one. I am making uneven and even breds and I match paper levels- I'm happy with that.

I did get this guy @Natalya1917! Thanks for the straw

  • If you don’t have the room to do both, I would separate by generation. :)

  • Oh my gosh, he's adorable! That's awesome!

So long as you're happy, that's the important bit. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, just explaining the logic behind it. There's no wrong way to play the game (so long as you're following the rules lol). Lots of people do play that way, and I did too for my first eight months or so.
I separate by gen and not paper level myself, and then I can set my bars for each gen. That's just my way though

  • I'm good for this month but maybe in November. Thank you though

  • @Natalya thanks for the explanation. It makes sense. I just have a hard enough time with so many staying intact that I don't know who to use and like I said, I don't see my ratio as skewed. But if it were, hey it makes making that decision that much easier.
