PATN2?
-
I've seen PATN2 referenced a few times now, but haven't seen anything explaining what it is. I breed mainly appys so I'm very curious. Please help my clueless self out :))ID - 251100

PATN2 is another gene at the ECA3P locus, with PATN1 and +. It's a hidden gene, so in testing it shows up as +. It makes bigger blankets with more spotting than +, like PATN1 does, but it seems to result in less widespread white than 1. But we don't actually know, I don't thinkSpiderweb Stables

There are some players that, I think, are referring to PATN+ (meaning not PATN1) as PATN2. I have not seen Ammit referring to it in this way, though. However, there is certainly far more to the Appaloosa complex of genes than is to be found in the current results we can from the gene test. Snowflake is one example; a gene that we know for sure is part of the game but that is not testable. Any horse can carry the gene, but it is hidden unless there are two copies and at least one Llp allele. In the same way, Dense Pheomelanin (DP) and Kit Promoter (KP) are not testable.
I don't make a point of breeding for Appaloosa as a general rule, so I'm not really an expert on it. -
I think calling it PATN2 comes from the GMT tattoo from changing it, which looks like this :)
Here's a horse with the tattoo:
LI Aurora
Also I want to say (I've checked this before and since forgotten what it looked like...) but when you open a horse's GMT page & select ECA3P+ ... If the horse has PATN2 it will show 2 options for GMTing. Usually, if the horse is truly ECA3P+ and not PATN2, the only option is to GMT it to PATN1. If it is PATN2 showing as ECA3P+, however, you will have the option to either GMT to PATN1 or ECA3P+.Post edited by Heartwood at 2019-10-06 18:10:37ID: 247225

Has Ammit ever confirmed that it is part of the game gene set? I haven't seen it, but I might have missed something.

I don't know if Ammit's confirmed it or not, but there is definitely another gene there. You can see in the GMT lab if they carry it because it gives you the option to change it to either + or PATN1, whereas true +'s just give you the + > PATN1 option. Also it shows on the horses, for sure. Here's a ++:

@SandyCreekAcres As far as I know she hasn't, but I'm not really sure either since I've only been around for under a year. I might not have found any older forum posts about it :-?ID: 247225

Yeah, PATN2 is a thing. It just shows up as “+” in the horse’s testing, but you can see it in the GMT lab.
So there are 3 types of Appy, basically. PATN1, PATN2, and +

It's a bug that you can see it at all. PATN2 was a hypothetical real-life gene that has sence been disproven.Need to contact me? Read this first.
