How do you decide which mares to keep for breeding?
-
Hey guys so I'm just wondering how you decide which mares to use for breeding? Do you go by PT, consistency ect.. I feel like I have tons of mares and could downsize on some of them to make things easier. Besides comparison testing as I don't have enough Hbs for that lolPost edited by RutledgeRanch at 2019-10-12 06:34:45

I'm planning on culling my herd of brood mares down based on their PT scores and personal prettiness standard.
-
@AlloraKerrhy all my 2g mares are pretty but some do have PTS under 10 and I'd like to bring my show bonus up as well lol so it'd be a win win bettering my her and snipping those I could
-
I have 2 criterias, and the mare should check in to at least one of them:
- Paper level
- I like her
I try to only use mares that paper higher than their parents (and/or are superior to their dams). But breeding should be fun, so if a mare is super pretty, and I really love her, I will breed her even if she does not paper better or turns out to be AGA as their mother :)
-
In general, I don't want red based horses (personal opinion) so chestnuts either creates or foals get sold or spayed. Then my keepers are based on PT score, papers and pattern I want appaloosa and not frame splash or tobiano.
However that all goes out the window in my Tiger eyes line. Tiger eyes line gets leeway in color and pattern as long as they have TE1or2 but all have to pass the SBA. -
oh, I never snip any of my horses (unless breeding advice did it for me). I just sell the ones I no longer want. all my show horses are either gifts from other players or pretty horses that I wish hadn't gotten snipped.
-
I cull inconsistent and wrong colour (I breed grullos only) And only keep the top 2 papers per generation with a few generations large enough that I’ve narrowed it down to 1 paper level
Currently comp testing all my mares working from the oldest down. My show horse are paying for that though I have spread it out over a month for my bank balance to recover. Still have 0-4 year old mares to doBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
@AlloraKerrhy snipping horses gives them a boost for showing and they take longer to level off which helps them get to higher levels of shows and earning more points per showBreeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes

I've been trying to do this too. I think I've snipped over 150 maybe 200 mares, all I loved. But what did it for me was their age and how often I used them and how pretty they were because I breed for color. Its hard and it hurts but in the end I did feel better.
Let's say a horse is 16 but has over 10 offspring, she then stays, if she's 16 but has only like 2 or 3 then she gets snipped unless she has produced me a stunning foal from one of MY STALLIONS.
If she has pretty blah genes or not the right standards for said HH or generation. Paper, consistency, PT, color, ect. She gets snipped even if she has 10+ offspring. The only thing that'll save her is if she has given me a stunning foal, again from one of my stallions.
Since I breed for color I have to have the horse look pretty or to have a ton of amazing genes even if they look blah somehow. But that's usually sorted very easily with a couple of rerolls. For the ones that don't look pretty after all the rerolls and don't really have a few crazy or a ton of genes, they get snipped.
For new foals, the two above this apply. But, plans for her future now determine if she stays intact. If I can immediately find a plan for her she stays intact. If it takes me awhile but I eventually find one she stays but I'm still ify and watch her through the seasons. If I just can't figure out a plan for her then she gets snipped.
Another thing is comparing all the mares together/ comparing all the foals together. Not comparison testing! Just comparing them together for certain things, features, etc. Let's say I have 30+ horses that have a certain gene. The ones with really special genes or ones I use every season automatically stay intact. The ones that have genes I have a plethora of or if I don't care too much for it anymore are compared to each other till I snipped most of them until a few or one remain. Sometimes all of them if the gene is not special at all or if I just don't want it anymore.
I have a few other ways but that's mostly just how I feel when I look at the foal and if anything just doesn't tick or an accident was made. -
I've settled on a body type so now if any of my mares that don't fit that type have a filly closer to the standard with same or higher papers I'll spay the momma as a reminder to not breed her / breed her filly instead.
-
I periodically go through my mares by generation and spay the ones that have the lowest AFPT.
-
I run everything through SBA. Then I look at color - if they’re missing the genes I was aiming for, they get culled.
I try to now keep superior daughters, but I am also keeping several AGA that are perfect in every other way - and most, when paired with the right stud, produce a superior foal for me. 2G mares must test superior or paper higher, though. I have so many as is, so I can afford to be extra strict with them! -
This is what I do on my main account that doesn’t bootstrap.
Foundation mares I only have about 60-70
2g mare’s have to have ar least one of the genes I breed for (my studs don’t have stacked genes). Km, kp, Chinchilla, S+, black bassed, preferably second kit gene. Paper higher than dam. Right now I’m trying to get 60 2g mare’s so that’s all the criteria I have currently. When I get up there I will cull inconsistentsy, any PT under 10, and the shortest mares.
3g, needs to have a minimum of 2 genes 3 genes is preferred, still on a black based horse, preferably 2 kit genes. They need to paper superior to dam, or test Superior. When I get larger number I will cull inconsistentsy, pt, and hight.
4g should be at least het Km, hopefully Hom Chinchilla, S+, and Kp are negotiable. Or hom Km, het Chinchilla.
Each generation I’m adding a couple genes they have to have. I started out with my foundation stallions not having all the genes I’m after on one horse. I also recently realized I love dun on Chinchilla so I’m working on getting more foundation mares with dun.
I also have a limited number of stalls and pasture space for my mares. I can have 260 mares total, that is through 4g. When I’m breeding several 4g mares then I will reevaluate and buy another mare barn or pasture. Show horse barns are not limited, if I need another one I get another one. That really helps my daily bonus so I can do everything I want to do.
This is something I made awhile ago to help me keep perspective on how much of a daily bonus I need for my mares. It is a little outdated but it still helps. https://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/69963/my-breeding-budget-findings#Item_14 -
If they are superior to their dam they stay.

easy, must pass SBA and must be superior to dam. Even then if they come out missing fantasy genes that can't be gmt'd on and i dont like the plain colour they get snipped as well. When the dam tesring came out i did all my older mares and only ended up keeping maybe 10 out of 200-300 that tested AGA thier dam. for new foals that have been born since then i don't keep AGA ones intact, i just test them quickly before even looking to see how pretty they are so i don't get tempted XD
this method is producing me a lot of show ponies, I breed maybe 500 or 600 a year and end up with about 50-70 intact across all generations including embryos. But i know all the ones intact are good quality! my lines, epecially 3g/4g/5g were getting stagnant and most mares were only aga for 2-3 generations. So glad i now know which ones weren't amazing producers haha.

For me, mares must pass SBA, they must be sup to their dams, and they must pass the eye test for me (If I like how they look or not). If they're too plain, they get spayed. If they're a bit on the plain side but have the lovely DP dappling, I keep.

Looks like I just need need to save up some Hbs and get some bigger barns that's my main problem lol
