Who Loves To Write?
  • I Love writing stories in my free time, I'm not very good at it but the ideas come to me like waves and I just write them down and connect them to a story. I usually loose interest after a few weeks but sometimes it's good to just take a break from reality and kind of make your own!
Does anybody else write short stories/poems/songs lyrics/novels? What's your favorite work you've done? What's an idea you have or are working on right now?

  • For the last, like, six months, writing and this game have been the two things my brain will consent to actually do most all of the time (I have bad depression and anxiety) so I've been writing kind of a ridiculous amount lately. It's really good to have something constructive that my brain doesn't shut down before I can actually do it. Mostly I've been working on my queer Arthurian thing, which I talked about in this thread, if you're interested, but I've done a couple shorter things lately too, including the first thing I've actually put out there for strangers to read, a goofy little fanfic. At the moment I'd say my "favorite" is said fanfic, because the tone worked really well and it actually came out how I wanted it to, but The Merlin Book, as it's somehow started being referred to, is pretty close to my heart.

  • I actually have four published books. Three are romance and one is a memoir about one of my horses. I also write poems sometimes. The poetry has to come out of specific incidents. Like when my house burned down or like when I was a wildland firefighter.
  • How cool!! I'm a huge romance fan myself @Dunappy9

@Natalya1917 thats the exact same reason I write too!

  • I've writing tons of little stories since I was 11 years old. I have even read one of my stories over the local radio station when I was 12. Now I just write mostly for myself. I always wanted to make a career out of writing books.

  • I love to write, though I can't seem to force myself to buckle down and finish anything. I've been working on a very complicated book with a pretty substantial story line/character base, plus I write some really dark poetry (not for the faint of heart!) to keep me grounded. I love that I can pour all of my over the top emotions onto a piece of paper and relieve the stresses of the day. I had a few poems published many years ago. My real dream is to have a book published.

On a related note, does anyone here know a good way to stay motivated to finish a project, because I can use all the advice I get. I have the attention span of a two year old and when I truly sit down to write, I usually manage to get a page or two out before I find myself staring into space wondering if whales can get rabies or thinking about how much I love garlic bread. I work a weird schedule which leaves me with perfect spaces of time to write, but I can't focus or lack motivation to start. I don't know if it is the fear of failure that stops me or just a complete lack of discipline. Help!

  • I used to spend a ton of time on an RP forum doing just that! I completely lack the ability to cudgel my brain into some semblance of organization when it comes to characters I've created so it was a neat way to work with others and narrate a story together. The cool thing was it had a huge variety of styles so there was something for everyone and every writing style had a place. I think at my peak I had well over 100 OCs (original characters) and four or five storylines going.

  • It's so fun to hear from all the writers we have here! I love writing novels and studying story and character structure. Genre fiction is my favorite, especially fantasy and steampunk. (Looking forward to NaNoWriMo next month!) Though lately I've been focusing on blogging and nonfiction. I took three courses from Creative Nonfiction this year and really enjoyed them. I learned so much more than I would have on my own from books. There really is no substitute for writing and sharing your work for critique with a class. I've also just started working as a proofreader and copyeditor. I've heard a lot of writers say they either love drafting but hate editing, or hate drafting but love editing; I can truly say that I love and need to do both. :)

@High Five Acres, when it comes to staying motivated, there are a few things that can help. You've probably heard all of this advice before, but starting early in the morning before you get distracted by a busy day can help. Also having a small, fixed amount of words or time that you will write every day and sticking to it. Combine short term daily goals that you can commit to easily (like your daily wordcount) with long term goals that inspire you (like visualizing your finished book!). One last thing, and this is a little bit of a theory on my part: I've heard the advice that you should tell someone your goal followed with daily updates, or even post them publicly, because that keeps you accountable to follow through. But I've found that I feel more motivated when my plans are a secret. Telling someone about them almost makes them real enough in a sense that I don't have to actually do them. So maybe think about which makes you more motivated? Do you feel accountable when others know your promise to yourself? Or do you prefer keeping it a secret and making it a reality through actions? Then you can surprise everyone when you casually mention, "Oh yeah, I just had a book published..."

PS: About whales... they are mammals, so I guess they could get rabies, but where would they ever be exposed to it?

  • @High Five Acres honestly I'm exactly the same way with motivation, it can be so hard to stay focused on one project, doesn't help that I'm trying to write three different novels at once :))

@CLynnRose I definitely think that setting small word goals for yourself can be helpful! Sometimes even if its not the main project, just writing something can help get your creativity flowing, or if it doesn't, teach you something that you'd like to work on improving about your writing! Your point about telling people publicly about projects is something I've definitely struggled with as well, I've stopped talking about my writing altogether because I feel like every time I do I jinx it! Wonder why that is :-?

I also love writing a lot! The most I've ever written for any one project was 50k (but it was fanfic...) Now I'm exclusively writing personal projects which feels unbelievably rewarding. I'd say my genre is typically urban or historical fantasy. Formulating plots used to be something I dreaded, but lately I've really been getting into meticulously planning different storylines, which I think has improved my writing a lot. It's so inspirational to hear about everyone else's projects! :)

  • I wrote a lot as a child - stories and poems. However, I have never felt confident as an adult to write. In my head, usually when I'm trying to get to sleep, I have plots going on for some books. Two are historical fiction based on my family history research, and another is a fantasy series (four books) but it's doubtful I will ever write them. (Helps me get to sleep though!)

  • I love writing! But only when it comes to writing speeches or assignments. It's weird, but I am genuinely awful at writing stories/poetry :))
My favorite writing I've done are my speeches for the Optimist Oratorical Competition. I don't know how many of you are familiar with it, but it's a great opportunity for people in public speaking and people who like to inspire! Last year the prompt was "is there a fine line between Optimism and Reality?". I tied my response to the bond I have between my horse and I, and I managed to get a Gold! Such a great experience :x
  • I love reading every ones comments! So glad I started this discussion! I find it hard to stay motivated to one idea, I have so many coming in and I get inspired by a lot of different things that it's hard to stay on track long enough to finish one.

I had started a book and gotten almost to the end and then suddenly my fire for it died out and I just now started a murder/mystery/romance book that I'm excited about but I'm scared i won't stick with it. I get so far into a book and think I'm not a good enough writer, I know I'm definitely not good enough for published books but oh well :))

  • I'll join the ranks of the HaJ writers, although for several years now my creative impulses have gone into photography and developing skills in drawing and painting that I never knew I had. Most of my writing is poetry, and I love squeezing my thoughts into a specific form, especially sonnets, without falling prey to forced rhymes. It took me a long time to be able to work adequately with free verse. A few of my poems have been about horses. This is one of my favorites, about Rosie, one of the therapeutic riding horses I've worked with (I've mentioned her on the forums a time or two :D), and one of the students she helped with.

    ROSIE'S GIFT

In a silent world of vague shadows and light,
confined to the sense of touch,
you reach writhing legs and good arm
(the other, shoulder displaced by birth,
    hangs twisted and still).
    Does something-anything-lie beyond my chair?

Trapped for a lifetime in infant mind,
so grievously wounded, what can you know?

    You are lifted with care,
tenderly carried to Rosie and placed,
    legs yawning, on broad back.
She, pasture bully, spoiled brat mare,
stands quiet, accepting your awkward weight,
    five attendants pressed close,
never twitches ear, leg, or tail,
walks on, when you're settled, with gentle step.

    Hips, shoulders move-
    front, back, up down,
    and barrel swings-
    left, right, left, right.
    You sway, then catch,
    with some support,
    her stride's strong beat.

Quite soon your restless arm and legs grow still.
They rest in the rocking of this moving world.

Your grin appears, a broad balloon
of helium happiness that lifts us, too.
You know the best of things-
    both joy and love.

  • Thats beautiful! I'm a HUGE fan of art, mostly painting and graphite drawing. I almost went to school to be an art teacher but it was too expensive (now I pursue my other passion, culinary pastry arts!)

Anyway, I love poems and sonnets! They're just so pretty and flow perfectly when done well

  • I'm currently working on a fanfic story for one of my characters from a game I play. It's been quite... a good mind exercise for me so far, because I've had to come up with his background, cultural and historical stuff for his "people" and so forth. I have the first few chapters on AO3.
  • @High Five Acres, I feel you on the motivation thing. It hasn't been happening with writing as much, but I struggle with that too.
One writing specific one that helps me whenever I get the clamming up, not good enough, fear of failure thing is this quote I read somewhere and don't remember where so I can't give appropriate credit: "All a first draft has to do is exist." When I need a push I remind myself that it's fine if it's terrible, I can revise like heck and do whatever I want with it once it exists. Just writing something, even if it's not 'right' or very good or whatever, is a very important step.

Also, according to the marine biologist I found on the internet, whales can get rabies (because any mammal can) but like @CLynnRose said exposure is a big factor. There are no cases of a whale with rabies on record, but there is one from Norway in the eighties of a seal with rabies. It's entirely plausible that a seal could get rabies on land and then bite a whale and give the whale rabies. Seals don't normally bite whales, though, because "it's a size thing", but it's rabies, so all bets are off on normal behavior

  • @Ammit, what is writing an RPG book like? What's the structure of those? I was raised in a barn and am not a gamer, so I don't really know anything about them.

@Peachtree, for me, working on a few different ones at once actually helps. I'm pretty sure it's a depression brain thing that it's this big of a deal for me, but I'd bet everybody gets this to some extent: sometimes my brain just goes "Ugh! No! I hate this whole story and I never want to look at it again! Burn it with fire!" This is usually completely unprompted as far as I can tell, btw. So I just go "Okay brain, that's fine, we'll close that folder right up," and then I go work on a different one. Before too long my brain gets over it and I can go back to my main focus. Also if you're just not interested or not feeling it right now, switching it up can help.

@CLynnRose, I don't tell most people about most goals, and there are several I don't tell anyone about, mostly because I don't need more accountability as much as I need space to think and progress at my own pace and not have to live up to others' expectations. Other people knowing about it and waiting for me to do something is just stressful to me.

@White Valley, I do the same thing! I almost always have, and I think it's my dad's fault. I have a vague memory about being worried about bad dreams, and my dad told me to tell myself a happy story as I fell asleep so that I would dream about that instead. I don't think I've ever once actually dreamed about what I was plotting out when I drifted off, but it is a nice way to fall asleep. And that kind of thing is pretty useful actually, for writing, because you can play with and twist around a bunch of possible versions of possible scenes and story lines that might not work at all on paper, but maybe they will, and you can work out some great ideas playing with them. "the Playdoh in my brain stage," one of my writing friends called it the other day.
