To collect eggs, or not?
-
With all the fun genes that that have been available this month, I've got a couple of new lines I'd like to start, and a limited number of foundation mares I like. Assuming money for embryo creation was not an issue, do you prefer to pull eggs from your mares, losing out on the pasture bonus to get more-but-lower chances for a good foal, or keep them in pasture for one single, but better, chance?ID #238663, she/her pronouns

I think depending on the age of the mare you can try both. Do egg collection one year and then pasture from then on. I do both.
-
Half my mares from each generation are in pasture and the other half in the barns. I pull eggs from my 8G barn mares on the last round of the month, and create the foals with no expectation of getting intact horses, but purely for show horses with high PT scores.
Keeping some mares in the barn lets me play around with breeding later in the month, after pastures have all been bred.Post edited by ConfluenceStable at 2019-10-20 08:22:46

I like to flush the mares ive spent alot of time on but that's just me. Sometimes I have good luck sometimes I don't. This season I got pretty lucky with intacts from embryo creation.
-
It's harder to get superior foals from my special foundation mares when kept in barns. As they get older, I move them into the pasture to get at least one or two superior foals.
At least the first 2 or 3 seasons, I collect eggs throughout and flush them at the end to maximize eggs. -
Wait a minute.... are you saying you can collect eggs more than once a season? This is a game-changer!ID #238663, she/her pronouns

Next you'll be telling me you can collect eggs while it's not breeding season or something crazy like thatID #238663, she/her pronouns

Yes, I believe its every 5days during the season. BUT Only if you do NOT breed the mare. So collect first then breed at the end.Post edited by Dunappy9 at 2019-10-20 11:33:28

Yup! If you pull an egg instead of flushing the mare, she isn't technically bred, and in five days you can pull another egg or flush her. You can also breed her after, I don't remember if you have to wait five days for that or not. So I pull an egg from all my special mares the first day that I can, and then every five days thereafter for the rest of the month and then flush them at the end.
I always do eggs. Even if I can't afford to make embryos I prioritize pulling eggs from my special mares. I can stockpile them and use them once I can, they're not going anywhere. And you get so many more chances that I think it totally makes up for losing the pasture bonus. Especially for me, since I don't have that many pastures and usually use them for later gens anyway, rather than foundations. I don't actually know the numbers, but say half of all pasture babies are superior (I'm sure that's a high estimate) and only a tenth of non pasture babies are superior: If you get five eggs you've made up that difference. Doing it this way you can get roughly 13-20 per season. I've gotten enough fantastic lab babies that it's worth it to me, for the mares that are special enough. My superior, A papered gen 2 brindle homozygous kit M stud, Bayamo, for instance, was a lab baby.
I wish I knew the actual numbers, but I'm pretty sure you make up for losing the pasture bonus. And along with the rare gems you get a some decent breeders that you can use or sell for a decent amount, and lots of pretty show ponies. However! I have only been playing for a year and have only had special GMTed mares worth pulling for maybe half that, so I am in no way the authority here.Spiderweb Stables

What's that you say? An excuse to make a spreadsheet? Don't mind if I do!ID #238663, she/her pronouns

Aw buddy! I like you! If it were me, I'd keep it to even B/Red crosses only, for the sake of data consistency. Or do a separate page for C/Yellow maybe.Spiderweb Stables

Hmmmmmmmm, I don't know if I have any B studs, buuuuuuuut I sure could, since I'm starting a new bunch of lines and allID #238663, she/her pronouns

I mean, even C/Yellow crosses would theoretically have the same proportions. The point is even papering. Perfect foundation to perfect foundation, ExPro to ExProSpiderweb Stables
