Needing some ideas
  • So, I've been thinking about this a lot lately. And I am very curious to know how you guys organize your horses. But not only that. What have you tried in the past that just didn't work out for you? What Is your current method? If you could change it, what would your preferred way of organizing your horses be?
  • I have barns for foundation, ET mares(embryo transfer) Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen4 and above, Fantasy Gene's, a show only barn and two special barns. One for Brindle and one for my SnowTiger (Snowflake Tiger eye) line.
Pasture is also the same way. I only have a pasture for Foundation and for Brindle at the moment though. I need more pastures eventually though.
  • Barns: Primary (usually empty), Mares (for mares I don’t want in pastures quite yet such as GMT projects), Colt Barn, Filly Barn, Stallion Barn, 2 Snowflake Barns, 2 Onyx Barns, 2 Watercolor Barns, Chinchilla Barn, Sale Barn and 4 Show Horse Barns

Pastures: Primary Pasture (for foundations), 2G Pasture, 2G Snowflake Pasture, 3G Pasture, 4G Pasture, 5G Pasture, 6G Pasture
Licensed for Onyx, Watercolor, Plaid, Mushroom, Splash M, Phantom Autumn, Ice 4, Ice 16, and Chinchilla - ID: 256300
  • I have a pasture for Red papered foundations and yellow foundation in hopes to get more Blue/A papered 2G, I also have a pasture for my 2G red papered mares, their offspring almost always has to be Blue/A otherwise they get snipped. I have a barn for my Foundation studs, A papered studs and B studs and then I have 1 6o stall show barn and 2 15 stall show barn. My primary barn usually has about 50-60 horses, I think right now it can hold 72 so I'll be needing more barns soon haha

I used to organize by generation for a LONG time and it worked, but then I started getting a lot more 2G A studs and a few Blue 2G mares and I was getting mixed up in the breeding so now I put them in their right barns for papers and i also label their paper rank in the name, such as my A papered 2G studs would be

    kG2A (enter name)

    i.e. 2G red mares are:

    r2G (enter name)

Any special genes that I might want to know about go at the end of the name

    Sooty+ is sP
    Nondun1 is nd1
    Pearl is prl
    Splash M is sM
    Kit M is kM
    watercolor is wtc

  • I’ve used spreadsheets in the past with each line on a separate tab but what really helped was coming up with a prefix naming system that was short and to the point so that in 6 spaces I could read the gender, generation, and line. Also it groups all the horses in that generation and line together.

    My prefix is:

    JS - studs
    JL - mares

Next for the generation I use the alphabet starting with a for 2nd Gen, b 3rd Gen, c 4th Gen etc.

For lines I have several 2 letter indicators IC- Ice, KP (homo) or kp (het), PL plaid, NX nexus, AX Axiom

So JLa IC is a 2nd Gen ice mare.

I also have all my show horses in 1000 stall barns and my breeding barns and pastures are labeled by the mare prefix and Gen so when I move mares around I just have to match prefixes to get them in the right pasture or barn

Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes
  • My Primary Barn is empty most times, because it doesn't automatically enter shows, in there I usually hold whatever doesn't fit in any of the other barns so its a bit of a mish mash ...
With That said, this one of my Barn conundrums ... still trying to sort it out a bit. I have A Lot of empty stalls, and here's the reason why ...

Each gen of Appies have their own barn (2g 3g 4g the list goes on)
Each gen of Not Appies have their own barn (Kit 2g 3g the list goes on)
Each gen of my combined restricted genes have their own barns (expect Spider ... that baby is getting his own barn ... oh yah cause I need one more lol)

Annnd cause I be a little OCD

Satin barns broke down into two groups
Appy each gen has their own barn ... (So Satin Appy spots 2g 3g list goes on)
Not Appy each gen has their own barn (So Satin All the Chrome 2g 3g list goes on)

    Not done yet though
Expro Appy foundation their own barn
    Brindles foundation their own barn
GTM projects/Rank Specials/ Expros are in one barn
Last but not least ... the Show barns ...

Yah I know I have a problem ... right now working towards saving up for one more mondo show barn (just little over 250 IVS left to go ...) so I can lower some of the smaller show barns and bump them up to breeding stock barns and get rid of the 30's and 60's that were bought to be able to separate these guys. Some people have horse hoarding problems ... mine is serious case of trying to be organized ....

Not even gonna talk about the pastures .... nope cause they are a mess lol

  • Barns:
Primary barn (empty, use it for emptying/sorting foals from pastures mostly)
    A stallions
    B stallions
    Foundation studs (GMT’d boys)
GMT mares (those I pull eggs from)
Off-season mares (removed from pasture for the season)
    (26) show barns (currently)
    Surrogate mares
    Year 88 Foals
    Year 89 Foals
    Year 90 Foals
    For Auction

All my breeding mares for the year are in pastures. I keep 3 years’ worth of foal barns - when the foals are 3 years old, the keeper studs go in the respective stallion barns, and the mares go to pasture to build up their bonus for the next breeding season. Any mares that get pushed out of the pastures as a result go to the off-season mares barn. All of the intact foals from the pastures go to their Year X Foals barn (spelds go to the next available show barn) to chill until I start culling them as 2-year-olds (approximately, sooner if I need more space in the foals barn).

Pastures change seasonally, depending on what I want to focus on. My barn it still fairly young (<1 year irl), so I’m still solidifying my “signature” lines.<br />
    Hope this helps! :)

  • My barns are only roughly organised, a mare barn, a stallion barn, and show barns with the rest mostly just being for foals until they grow up and end up in pastures or one of the other barns. They are mostly 1k barns. My pastures are very well organised as I breed the same generation, and same era together, so I have a lot of pastures to keep them all separate. Plus a couple of smaller empty ones I can put them into to breed small groups. They are named with generation and era (e.g. KT2 E7 Horsename) to make them easy to find. Sometimes I might also add a suffix to the end with one of their special genes so I can find them, say mu for mushroom, sa for satin, wc for watercolour. But don't use a lot of suffixes

  • I don't have many barns yet (average of three) - my primary barn ends up holding my stallions & any mares who aren't in pasture, and anything i haven't sorted through, usually, then i have a show barn & a barn i usually call my "playpen" - intact foals & 2-year-olds.

To keep stuff organized, i may or may not have a google doc spreadsheet (with tabs for each account) with all of their names (or numbers if i haven't named them yet), mare/stallion/speld (each row on the spreadsheet is purple/blue/green to track that really easily), size (some of the tabs have height & bone weight, some just have RH/D/WB/RP/SP/C), Paper & PT scores, and then their gene strings (and i use different colors to make certain genes easier to spot), & actual appearance.
If i sell/auction a horse that i still have either parents or children of, i move its line down to a separate section. That way, i can check my mares' & stallions' offspring even if they got removed from the game for a more-accurate measure of their breeding performance. (I've given a few mares ONE more chance because even though their in-the-game offspring aren't really measuring up, they've had ones that would be but aren't around anymore for whatever reason.)
My husband makes a lot of fun of my spreadsheet... and since i've started playing on my phone at work, my spreadsheet needs some catching up from the week... #-o But it still makes life easier when it's time to start culling!
