How does KP work?
  • What exactly is KP? Can it show up on any horse? I don't understand how it works at all.
  • KP stands for Kit promoter. a horse has to have parents who carry it or are homozygous. Horses also have to have two KIT genes (ie. Tobiano, any white, either sabino, roan).

see how this gelding is slightly lighter all over his body? That's the KP working.
Licensed for Mushroom,Onyx, Watercolor, Ice 13, ice 16, Phantom lace, Phantom Diamond sparkle.
  • KP puts cloudy patches on horses with these genetic characteristics: must have 2 Kit mutations (may be 2 copies of the same one, like roan or tobiano) AND homozygous for KP.

KP is not testable, so you have to keep track of the possible carriers in some way.

    Here's one example of KP.

  • @sugarbread, no she does not. it has to be GMT'd onto a horse

  • W20 and White Factor can also affect the 'clouding' that KP puts on a horse.

Sugarbread, the cloudiness/roaning you are seeing is most likely from her frame or appaloosa genes.

  • Ooooooohhhhhhh. I’m suddenly realizing why none of my KP carriers are giving me KP foals. I bet none of them are homozygous for kit genes.
  • Yep, Paradoxphoenix I had to learn that lesson, too. I guess the term KIT PROMOTER wasn't enough of a hint for me! And my abortive GP line had the same problem...I breed all chestnut horses, and it only shows on bays! Derp!

  • While we're on the topic, is GP recessive?

  • @Taliesin yes, for a horse to show the GP tail it needs to be homozygous for GP (and also be E with at least 1 A/A+/At).
