Books!
-
So I figured I'd start this just so all us readers don't overtake @Herzeloyde's contest post. I added a couple authors to her post, Grace Livingston Hill and Emily Loring. However I also love to read Robin Mckinley, Anne McCaffrey's Power Lines trilogy, Zane Grey, Christine Feehan, Jacquelyn Frank, and anything by Jayne Ann Krentz with all her many nom de plumes. I generally like to read. I would prefer to read than anything, but with a full time job, three kids, and life in general it hasn't been very often the that I get to sit down and read a whole book.Post edited by bluchrystals at 2019-11-06 09:05:49

@GildedFire I love Erin Hunter's Warriors series! I am 22 and graduated college two years ago, and i have been reading and rereading the entire series since i was in 6th grade :)) Literally my favorite ever!
My other favorite series which i haven't read in awhile (I don't own the books) is Dragons of Starlight by Bryan Davis. Such a good series!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I miss reading but I never have time to sit and read anymore :(
I love paranormal type stories like the Shiver Trilogy books by maggie stiefvater -
@Crowned1, have you read The Wonky Donkey? My husband read it to my daughter's and it was hilarious! More because of his fumbles than the book, but it's really good. =))
-
@bluchrystals - Yes!!! My mom has it at her house to read to the grandbabies. It is hilarious! Haha! If you haven't yet seen the viral video of a Scottish grandmother reading that book for the first time, go look it up!Post edited by Crowned1 at 2019-11-06 11:20:39

Good call on starting a new thread for us to discuss books, Blu!
@Bambi207 - if you like "speculative fiction" (I guess that encompases paranormal and horror) you might really enjoy some of the short stories my brother has had published. I think he is a great writer, even though a lot of what he writes isn't typically my preferred genera. He edited and published an anthology a couple years ago called "Silent Screams" that collected speculative stories which have a social justice twist. There are some really good ones in that collection.
He also wrote a fun fantasy book called "Pantheon" that combines elements of Greek mythology with a wild west setting - it sounds wierd, but it totally works! @HorseAngel - if you like the Percy Jackson series, you might really enjoy this one. :)
You can find info about all his work at www.joshstrnad.com .Post edited by Crowned1 at 2019-11-06 11:34:03Thanked by 1Herzeloyde -
I'm in the middle of "The Horses Know" Trilogy. In the middle literally. I just started the second book of the series. I try to read three books per week so this Trilogy will take up my week this week. Don't know what I'll read next week, but I have about 1200 as of yet unread books on my to read list and about 200 of them already on my Kindle. I read almost anything that isn't Horror. Has anyone read Spirit Horses by Alan Evan's?
Thanked by 1Herzeloyde -
This thread is definitely getting bookmarked!
I'm in the middle of the Morgaine books by CJ Cherryh, and I've read a couple of her other sets and really liked them. When I worked in a call center, I read all of Jim Butcher's books, courtesy of a coworker, and they were a lot of fun... I have probably 20 never-read books on my shelf, from when I thought I'd be able to read paper books with a tiny human around, but mostly I find ebooks to read these days (he's less likely to harm my phone if he snatches it!), so they'll probably sit a while longer.
My first book I ever bought for myself brand new was actually Equine Genetics and Selection Procedures, as I've always loved horses and been fascinated by genetics, so I was super-thrilled to run across this game!ID 252818 | Breeding for TE livers, with satin hopefullyThanked by 1Herzeloyde -
I am also a huge reader. I love almost every genre, as long as the author is either an artist with language or storycrafting.
Thanks to this post and my post, I have already gotten new input. For example, I had never heard about Wattpad before!
My two huge passions are fantasy and Russian classics. I LOVE everything Tolkien, and I also have had a lot of fun with Harry Potter. I have a confession to make, and that is that I have never read Narnia before, so that will be my winter reading.
I am also in love with Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. First time I read The Brothers Karamasov, I could not leave it, and finished all the 1000+ pages in under four days, after reading almost day and night.
Poetry is something I enjoyed since childhood. Then, for many years I stopped reading it, but now it is becoming more and more important for me again. In my native Norwegian, I love Hans Børli and Arne Garborg's Haugtussa, an epic circle of poems that takes the reader through folklore, supernatural creatures like tussefolket, incredible descriptions of nature and its powers etc.
The Swedish Karin Boye and the Swedish-Finnish Edith Södergran are also favourites.
And I am always mesmerized by the strength of Anna Akhamtova.
At this moment I have two books next to me, waiting to be opened:
The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer.
Since my life is changing again, I want to share with you a poem by Robert Frost, that has followed me during life:
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Does anyone read non-fiction? What is your favourite?

I love that poem! I have the whole Narnia collection and re-read it at least once a year. It was a Christmas gift from my parents when I was 15, the only thing I asked for that year.Thanked by 1Herzeloyde
-
Aaw <3 I can't wait to read it! Unfortunatly, the Narnia series is in my parent's home, and I am 3000 km away, so I must wait until the end of December. But I think it will be the perfect book for that time

In college we had Christmastime Narnia read alouds with cookies and hot chocolate.Spiderweb Stables

And also Dune. Great Sci-fi is also so fun to read! And it is interesting how easier it is to touch difficult subjects when things are set in a world different from ours.
The Litany Against Fear has been my companion during many moments:
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." -
@Taliesin, that sounds like the most wonderful thing ever!
-
I really want to start a Christmas tradition with the tiny tyrant - people i know have said they do an "Advent Calendar" of books, and all month leading up to Christmas, they open a book each night & read it before bed. I was forever reading as a kid, and i really want to make sure the wee one learns how much there is to love about books!
OOH, i need to re-read Dune - i read it while i was pregnant, and pregnancy brain ate it...
ID 252818 | Breeding for TE livers, with satin hopefully -
I recently re-read Dune then watched the 1980s movie! (Laughably bad, but still REALLY cool!)
I am currently working through the Dragonriders of Pern series for the bazillionth time.
I also love Mercedes Lackey Valdemar series, and Ann Bishops Black Jewels and The Others series. (REALLY Love The Others!)
I have tons of e books, too, but sometimes you just want to hold that book in your hands!

@Bluchrystals Have you ever read Beauty by Robin Mckinely? I absolutely adore that book.
@Herzeloyde if you like fiction that is a slightly off reading wise, I would check out The House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
@ConfluenceStable If you like dragons I would check out Eragon by Christopher PaoliniID: 253959
Breeding snowflakes -
@BlackBloodlines, I've read Beauty and I've also read Eragon.
-
@BlackBloodlines - We have very similar tastes! I have read and enjoyed every one of the books you mentioned.
I mean, are you really a horse lover if you've never read any of Marguerite Henry's classics? Haha!
I had totally forgotten about Beauty- it has probably been 20yrs since I read that one (gosh, I'm getting old!) - now I want to see if my library has it so I can reread it.
House of the Scorpion was very interesting - I have a degree in Bioethics, so I really enjoy sci-fi that has themes along those lines. Another well written sci-fi novel (that doesn't present as sci-fi until you get further into the story) which deals with Bioethics and human dignity is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. (This one is definitely not a YA book, though - I'd reserve this for the 16 & over crowd) -
Books are my escape from life - during my childhood (which was not great) I always had my nose in a book. I used to check the wardrobe occasionally to see if I could get into Narnia!
I also love the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey - I want to live in a Weyr and eat roast wherry!
I used to read all the great science fiction writers (mainly American) like Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury, Doc Smith and Clarke. These days I like well written historical fiction and also some fantasy novels. If you've not read Katharine Kerr's Deverry series I can highly recommend it. -
I love books, I am always reading!! I read so much it takes me a while to remember my favourites!! But they definitely include ones mentioned above like Anne McCaffreys Pern, really love Anne Bishops books, Mercedes Lackey and Robin Hobb. Loved Dune, haven't read it for ages though. Melanie Rawn I love, especially her Dragon Prince and Dragon Star series. And so many more I'm sure I'll remember when others post them!!
-
@Kintara, I read so much when I was a kid that I made a rolodex to save my favorites. It included the author, title, and how many pages the book was. Only problem was I lost it when I moved.
-
I've managed to replace all my favorites except one. I can't even find it at the library. I can't remember the title, but I remember it was a story about a woman and her sister. They raised tropical parrots in averies in Michigan(Minnisota?). Anyway, the woman travels to South America to help with a smuggling investigation that turns in to a murder investigation. She falls in love and marries the investigator and they raise parrots. He builds her a beautiful avery. Pretty sure it's an Avon Mystery, but I can't find a listing of their old books. It's old :)) maybe late eighties early nineties.
-
A couple friends of mine are authors in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. RA MacAvoy has some excellent published works, of which my favorite is The Grey Horse; her most famous work is Tea With the Black Dragon. Then there is Jen Pretty who is just starting her career and has several novels that are interesting new takes on several fantasy themes. She has been doing a lot of free ebook promotions so I recommend watching her for some free books.

Thanks, monsterpony! The Grey Horse popped up in one of the email book lists I subscribe to today. I now have a copy on my Kindle and am looking forward to reading it.
