Buckskin Genetics
-
I absolute adore buckskins, so I've had a side breeding project just for them. I know the base genetics to get buckskin, and have been trying to build up my herd that will always produce buckskins(at least from the first generation). However, one of the things that I don't like is when the buckskins end up up with a lighter/brown mane as opposed to black. As far as I know, flaxen shouldn't have any effect on buckskins, but I've kept it out of the breeding pool regardless, and have kept silver out as well, because I know that will change the black mane and tail. But I still get a few like the filly below who don't have the black mane and tail. Am I missing the gene that's causing this? Or is it just purely variation that would potentially go away with portrait rerolls?

I think it might be the appy, appys tend to have different shades of coat colours so maybe that's the case?HJ1 160524

I honestly hadn't even though that appy might be causing that. Those were the only two from this season's foals, and the only two appys. I can't remember from previous seasons, but I'll definitely have to keep a closer eye on that and see.

Appy can have some color shifting. I think that is your likely cause.

I just went through my Buckskins in the search and found out that it is DEFINITELY the appy! All my Buckskins with appy have brown hair. The ones without appy all have black! NEVER noticed it until now! You definitely learn something new in this game everyday it seems, lol.

That's super interesting. I would've never even considered appy might be causing that. Guess it's time to go take those three appy mares out of the pasture lol
