Getting deep into genetics
  • Thanks to H&J, I've started trying to figure out other genetics, starting with Cats, and OH BOY is it a whole different ball game than with horses! But I learnt that my bottle babies from May aren't fathered by who we thought they were =))

Has anyone else done something similar? I love the game but I need more challenging genes now that I have most horse genes understood :))
  • Cat genetics are extra crazy because kittens from the same litter can be half siblings fathered by different Tom Cats!
  • @3rdCrowned1 that's exactly what I figured out with my May bottle baby litter!

    We have :
    1 female tortie
    1 female black tuxedo
    1 female orange...

    Out of a tortie female

There is an orange male and a black tuxedo male for possible fathers...

The black male can't throw orange females and the orange male can't throw black females without them being calico sooooo... That means 2 different daddies =))

  • One of my oldest friends started raising pet ratties for the same reason. She happened upon a white feeder rat that was so sweet she took him home and named him Snack! Then she decided that rats, because of how quickly they breed, would be perfect to learn genetic inheritance. She bred, raised, and sold them as pets and (this part blew me away) SHOW ratties! I got several rats from her. She even had the boys neutered so they wouldn't fight.

After rats she moved on to bearded dragons, then birds. While I think she went WAY overboard, it was fun to have the opportunity to play with all her critters!

I will say that corgis have been the one passion she has stuck with, over the years, and she has done a GREAT job with them. My boy Billy is one of her best, with titles in conformation and obedience. She has had others that did very well in herding, agility, and tracking!

  • I use to breed rats as well as mice and gerbils and while I love the color combinations you get with mice, rats were always so much fun! The gerbils were too high maintenance between housing requirements and the fact that they chewed through everything!

I will always recommend a rat for a beginner pet before I'd recommend any other small "beginner" pet

  • @Taliesin, I know a friend breeds them. its the same with leopard geckos, when breeding depending on where the parents come from you never know what baby your gonna get.

  • I breed rabbits for show, that’s how my interest got peaked in genetics. I already know most of rabbit genetics like the back of my hand, so horses have been fun to learn
Licensed for Onyx, Watercolor, Plaid, Mushroom, Splash M, Phantom Autumn, Ice 4, Ice 16, and Chinchilla - ID: 256300
  • There is way too many gene variants when it comes to reptiles for me to keep up with.. I fallow Brian Barczyk on YouTube because of his egg cutting clips but I sit there listening to him talk about the different genes and I get lost lol.

I use to breed netherland dwarfs which was super fun but a bad trade with a 4h child and their dishonest parents was very disheartening
    Thanked by 1Taliesin
  • @Bambi207 I follow him too! I also follow Snake Discovery which is how I found Brian and I'm watching a few others to see if I want to follow them as well. I actually wish I could breed rabbits for show and genetics but their being sold as pets and are for food.
  • @Bambi207 I'm sorry you had that bad experience. But I actually did Netherlands too! And then Dutch, because I wanted something that wouldn't bite me! :)) Netherlands are fun because they come in, like, every rabbit color

  • @Woleven l'll definitely look up Snake Discovery!

@Taliesin I always wanted to try to make my own Magpie netherlands but I didn't get past black and blues.. I had a breeder doe that was absolutely amazing! She was the sweetest Netherland ever even though she never got the dwarf gene ! My buck was a different story.. but his babies were never like him thankfully! I traded him and my favorite daughter of his with a Silver Martin doe and buck and the buck ended up having malocclusion and the child's parents blocked me when I messaged them.. but 9 years later, I still have that crooked toothed buck that my mom ended up naming Little Man..
  • Snake genetics were confusing for me; used to breed Crested geckos (those were fun, back before there where axanthics, and Lilly whites) it was fun seeing what I would get out of a Tiger x Harley pair, or dalmation x flame pair. And then gargoyle geckos, though I never actually got any good eggs from them.

  • @Bambi207 what resources have you been learning cat genetics from? Books? Online research? I’m interested too and have no idea what to begin! :D

  • @HelenofTroy I love Cresties! They have to be my favorite gecko ever aside of the Tokay!

@FallOutRoyale I've been reading online! I'll send you the websites I've started out on
  • They are super cute! And I’m trying to talk my hubby into getting one or two...or Leopard geckos.

  • Ive been trying to get my husband to let me breed mice again for the last 2 years lol
I don't think he going to budge but it would be fun to try to breed them again now that I have a better understanding of how genetics in general work
  • Once, when I was fairly young, my oldest brother had a pair of mice. I think that the male was white and the female was brown and white spotted, though I may have their colors reversed at this distance in time. Anyway, by the time he had reached the third or fourth generation letting the offspring breed, he was getting babies that were silvery gray, apricot, pale lavender, to name a few surprising shades, as well as brown and white and other normal shades. That was about the time our parents called a halt to it, probably because my father was extremely allergic to animal dander and there were enough mice to trigger it.

  • Oh l have always wanted a leopard gecko but my mom hates reptiles so I did have some other pets like fish and a parakeet! I have wanted to learn about how other animal genes work(after I have learned everything I can about horse genetics) my sister had some min lop rabbits that she bred for a while, they were all black but she had started to get some really pretty silvers in the second or third generation (still not sure why). We had to sell them when we moved but it was really cool! She now has a female tortoise cat she wants to breed, I don't know really anything about how cat genes work either so I had better start learning soon as I have always tried to help out when she undergoes a breeding project lol!
