Herd to big to manage?
  • My herd has grown to 700 horses; not a lot compared to some I know. But my herd is feeling too big for me to manage; I like to name and tack up my horses and right now I haven't even looked at a good portion of my horses. I would like to shrink it back down to under 500. However, my problem is that I have finally reached the point were I can buy 1 IV per day; which will make it easier to buy GMTs and boosts. I have not really bothed with those too much as I couldn't afford them, and maybe I can now. What would you all recommend? Is it possible to shrink my herd without taking to much of a hit in my daily bonus?

  • You may just have to be more selective about your show horses. What is your ratio of intact to altered horses?

  • Out of 699 horses 218 are intact. 43 of those are this season's foals that I haven't finished testing and sorting yet.
  • Only 71 horses out of my entire herd are over 9.
  • I would save the IVs to buy a bigger barn to put show ponies in so that you can keep your daily bonus high. But that might be my herd hoarding problem talking. :D I've got over 5000 stalls.
  • Maybe auction your under performing show horses over 9 years old. I'll dig out a couple of examples from your barn.

This gelding is 10 and has a year left to train before he levels off. This year he is currently scoring 275-277 (not really gaining points) and is currently placing in the middle of his Grand Prix local classes. He may level up to regional and drop to the bottom of his classes, costing you money. His daily payout is 30 hb's or 900 hb's for year 90. If he passes at 17yo he will have made you approx 6300, slightly less than his total payout.

This gelding is the same age, but, a much better show horse. He is placing much higher in the highest level class and will train for a lot longer. His daily payout is 94 hb's and his total payout is 20962 hb's. Almost three times as much.

  • I am the one who doesn't like spending HBs but have no problem buying a barn with RL money lol
That being said I've started buying a 90 stall barn every month or so and filling it with closed gene auction foals.. I didn't go too bid happy this season so I still have about 30 some stalls left to fill in this month's barn
  • @Pagan how do I know if a horse is under performing? And how do I know how many points a horse is adding with each show? My 10yos are all over the place with points. A few like Sesame have between 800 and 1000 points, a few have between 300 and 400, the rest are between 400 and 800. How would you recommend culling my show herd?
  • You can look at the older ones & see if they've already leveled off, or if they're close to it (intact horses typically level off the age that matches their PT score so a 9.9 PT horse who hasn't been gelded/spayed ought to level off when they're 10 years, from what i understand, and gelded/spayed horses typically level off a year or so after their PT score age). If they're leveled off & are scoring in the bottom of their class (check this by going to the "Records" tab on the horse - it'll show their recent placings in shows), you can expect they won't increase their points much, if at all.
Since you can now auction over-10-year-old horses for their lifetime payout, it might be a good route to take to clear out some.
I don't really have any horses who're that old yet, so this is mostly a compilation of what i've heard other people recommend and it may not be 100% accurate. :)

  • @darkpixe, sounds about right. Note that a leveled off horse who's at the top of their class will keep earning points, so in the long run it's better to keep them.
