What are gene licences and how do they work and why do I want one?
Back after a long break and feeling a little clueless right now. I've done a forum search. Can't find an explanation.

I'm sure someone else can explain it better then me, but gene licenses are basically for fantasy Gene's and other genes you can purchase with real money. When you add it to a horse you are given that license and that gives you the ability to purchase other horses from other players with that gene. Anyone who doesnt own a gene license wont be able to breed to horses with it or buy horses from other players. You also can join the chat group that is reserved just for people who also have that license. This month they have different genes for sale every day, some are closed genes and some arent. If you look at someone's page in game you can see on the bottom which ones they have purchased with real money.

Yeah thats sort of what it is. Usually all of the genes I want are ones that I dont have yet. Haha. But this month is a great time to get any you want to have!

For example, a rare gene (needing a license) is phantom Autumn/Bats/Skeletons. Basically, they have that design inside of like a white 10 or w3 pattern, like this baby: https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=9783615

Other rare ones are the new Ice 16, Nexus, Axiom colors, Wrong Warp, Plaid, Chinchilla, etc.

That make sense..?

@bravo25, axiom nexus doesn’t need a license but is regularly sold on the sales board.

Basically we have fantasy genes - fun colours that you wouldn't find in real life (this game is still based on solid genetic research and kept updated by Ammit). There are two kinds of fantasy genes, those that are open and don't need a license so you can breed or sell them to anyone, and those that are closed and you will need a license for as described by lethalximpulse.

As a side note, without the license, you can still buy spayed or gelded horses to be show ponies. So you can still enjoy the beauty even if you can't afford the real life money. You will not be able to buy intact horses, straws, or eggs for which you do not have the license.

Thanks everyone. I'm kind of a real life gene old fashioned person. This is all very good to know and I love that you can own the fantasy gene show horses.

Yeah, even if you don't want to breed fantasy genes, you can still have fantasy show horses as something pretty to look at.
