Mare Quality

Quick question for everyone on how you cull fillies. I put mine through strict mare advice and the showing aptitude test, but I still end up with so many intact since pastures came out. Is there a good way of judging a mare before she can paper? What should a mare paper at for her generation? I'm mostly at 2nd gens right now, but I do have some 3rd and 4th.

I narrow them with showing aptitude. ....mare advice....after i do test them for consistency... i lot of them get spayed after that.... and if i still have to narrow i look at the color i want... or last pt score...but pt score can get really pricey if you do a lot of them...Post edited by leiana at 2015-02-06 11:02:46Thanked by 1BigBosAcres

I use SMA and SAT. After that I cull the very most "boring" colors. Plain bays, light chestnuts and so on. After that I wait untill they have their first foal, and I always PT test every foal. Then I cull my mares by their foals PT scores. I only keep the best. Every year, after I'm done breeding, I pull up my mares in the herd download and cull hard by AFPT.ID 195859Thanked by 1BigBosAcres

Yep, I pretty much do exactly what Maribo does, also pt test every foals and work out a lot of mares from that. Although if I'm ok for room I might wait to paper gen3s as culling the reds is a good way to thin them down. I cull a large proportion of my red gen2s as wellPost edited by Kintara at 2015-02-06 14:13:05Thanked by 1BigBosAcres

Thanks a bunch this has really helped me get down on my fillies. I had way too many 2nd gens from not very many stallions.
