Varnish Hierarchy Questions
-
I've been eyeing this mare since last month when I learned there was a non varnishing allele for Appaloosas. I just refreshed her image and she doesn't appear to have gotten any extra white hairs. She's an exceptional producing Appaloosa, not an evergreen boughs. Can regular creates stay dark? Or is she just extremely slow at varnishing?

I'm used to Appaloosas varnishing out like this one (same age as mare above:

What is the hierarchy of the varnish alleles? I understand the "regular" varnish is the most dominant, but I don't know where snowflake and non varnishing fall.
Are the varnishes co-dominant - as in are there are different speeds of varnishing depending on what combination of alleles a horse has? -
Evergreen Boughs are V V ('no' varnish). Regular creates can also be V V, it's luck, so your mare certainly could be.
Snowflake (Vsn) is completely recessive. As far as dominance/co-dominance between V and Vrn ('regular' varnish), I don't know either, but I'd like to, so I'll be watching this thread too lolSpiderweb Stables

At 5 years old with no varnish, you can be sure she will always be a slow varnisher.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )
