How you can help all these new players get aquainted!
  • I'm sure there are lots of ways this community can come up with. I've already seen a few, but I would like to suggest that we all make an effort to keep your forum thread titles as basic as possible.

I know I've said this before, because that was one of the reasons I had a hard time figuring things out in the beginning.

What do YOU remember being the hard part about getting started?

  • Patience. Patience was the hard part about getting started! :))

I highly recommend reading the FAQ and consulting it frequently until you get the hang of things. That’s how I learned to play. :) I caught up on lingo/slang and game culture by hanging out in the forum.

Maybe we could do a HaJ slang dictionary with “yum” and various other common terms?

  • Several things.

The lingo: What the heck is even breeding? Why does it matter so much?? A show herd?
I had no idea what it all meant. It made it difficult to get started.

    Following the trends.
Everyone wants to follow the trends, it's just natural. Someone was able to sell a horse for 100k+ and I have one that looks similar in my barns? AWESOME. I'll just list that sucker for.. wait why am I being told it's not worth that much? It's way too easy to get lost on the 'this is what's new and hot and what everybody wants!' train and for me it was difficult to find my identity.

    A Wealth of Information.
There's no such things as too much knowledge. Except when there is. This game is amazing, the community.. equally amazing! But we've got the knowledge, we're the cool kids. For new people, an overload of information can be well.. overwhelming. There are so many nuances to this game. As we get larger we must remember that not everyone learns and absorbs information the same way. I'm pretty visual, for one. Also, the forum search function is awful. My 'Bookmarked Discussions' tab is swamped with topics that took me hours of searching to locate.

This is a game of patience.. if you have a lot of free time.
This will probably be repeated often. And then repeated some more. Patience and organization will take you very far in this game.

I am ALWAYS out of money!
Honestly, this ties into the above things. There's a pervasive(but again, natural) need to have that new hot thing that just came out because 'get it now! who knows if it'll ever come back again'. It makes it very difficult to stay afloat.
I breed Drafts and star horses :D

  • It would be nice if we had an index of the more instructional threads on the forum. Like the technical stuff, or the more in-depth conversations about genetics and how the work together.

  • @paradoxpheonix - there is a bit of a list I started, in the FAQ, but I called it Abbreviations....I need to change that!

@Katiedid - I, too, have a ton of stuff bookmarked. When I get time I add it to the FAQ, but it has been a while since I had time!

  • Most things are covered in the FAQ, but perhaps we could start an 'Ask Me Anything' thread that gets closed after a set period (to prevent it evolving into a super long post.

  • Some people just need more examples of how, what and why.
The posts on how different genetics work or don't work together are really valuable for new players.
  • I went back to a genetics post from a very, very long time ago and saved it to my phone's home screen. I've read it and gone back to reference it a dozen times probably. Someone put together a huge post about all the different examples of DP and Sooty on just about every base color and an explanation of what to look for, with pictures, and which rank special herd helpers had DP. Most useful post I've found here. I see so many people asking about how to see DP being expressed. I wish there was an easy way for new players to find that post or similar ones. I stumbled upon it one day and it took me literally hours to find it again. I consider myself a new player still and I need to find those old posts that you all learned from and took the time to create!

  • @Mistylynn91, is it the DP Codex? I've got that link saved to my owner's notes on my main page and share it whenever I see a post asking about DP if I don't have an easy answer for them.
  • Yes it is. I love that post! I've never noticed it shared anywhere, just always see DP questions that I skim over

  • Fun Ice breaker games are always good to.
  • I had a hard time (and still do) of setting goals. Everyone has asked me, "what are your breeding goals?" I have been here since October and still have no idea. lol.

Having the patience to wait for the mares in the pastures to get enough days to make breeding them worthwhile. Even learning about the pastures was tricky at first. There is a trick to moving horses from one pasture to another for more deliberate breeding. It took me awhile to figure it out.

The advanced breeding lab is confusing, as in how to use straws and eggs.

I wish there was a preview for GMT/ licensing purchases so you know how it will look on the horse you picked before buying it. It would help those of us who are not as genetics savvy see what they are REALLY about to do their pony. (true story...like chinchilla turning certain horses white. *cough cough*)
  • Saving show horses...

I was about 6-8 months into playing with barely breaking 3k daily payout because I wasn't keeping spelds

Moral of this, work on your show herd first!
