I love the new culling tools
  • I on average have about 7-900+ mares in my pastures and mostly just play on a phone. Every couple of months I borrow my moms laptop and spend a weekend(s) sorting through, gelding and adding prefixes to all of the foals (and 2,3,4+ year olds that have still not been sorted) that have overflowed foal holding and taken over all of my breeding barns leaving my young breeders all crammed into the fewest barns possible which leaves culling them low on the list of priorities.

I like to keep each generation in their own barn so I can quickly see which generation is getting too big and which needs some help growing and do a quick overview of papers.

Usually there’s still some left over foals when I finish but they’re not of breeding age and usually fit back into the foal holding barn. I may or may not get back to them before their first season.

The last few months I’ve been working hard to catch up and finally finished comparison testing all of my intact horses (thinned our so many mares!) and completely emptied my foal holding barn and was sitting waiting for pasture breeding to start.

I was also able to do a little work in my AI lab (the next mess to clean up) and managed to advertise and sell off quite a few 2nd gen mares rather than just spaying them quickly and shoving them into a show barn (which is cool. I’d love to be able to share my lines as I’m one of the very few straight Grullo breeders but rarely have time to). I also sent a ton of show horses to the auction and emptied almost 3,000 show horse stalls (not including all the ones that were still spread out throughout all my other barns ungelded.)

But the feature that has changed my life for the better is the geld / spay from the barn page. I bred 943 pasture mares yesterday and even though I’m just on my phone I’ve already narrowed that number down to 261 intacts and would have gotten it down farther but had a large group of horses in the auction and had largely emptied my bank account the day before so that I wouldn’t go over the cap and loose out on (more) money as I’ve already made a few oopsies just before Christmas that cost me about 6million so I didn’t have enough money to finish PT, gene and breeding inspection testing until after the auction ran.

Now I’m down to the nitty gritty culling and comparison testing stage that would usually not be starting until I’d opened several hundred pages of inconsistent foals just to hit the geld button and close.

For the second month in a row I may just have a completely empty foal holding barn.

  • The only thing I'd like to add to all this is a biting that will allow us to name the foals from the barn page. I know its lazy. ;) But it would simply adding my prefixes so much!
  • Oh yeah that would be lovely too.

I’ve been doing the majority of my culling from the search page for ages so having a second tab open to check off the horses I’m going to snip makes it so much easier and quicker than opening 10-15+ pages to mass geld them rather than doing it one at a time.

Down to 220 intact horses and have a bunch of foals lined up for Sunday’s auction

  • I went through and used it to select all the young snips I had that were below 10.9 PT. Sent all them to auction. My BootStrap herd is doing good enough each season to fill that easily with foals over 11 PT, with most being over twelve.
