breeding quality and papers... What levels do you allow per generation?
-
I have been pretty strict with paper levels on my herd. My foundation stallion is "B", 2nd gen stud is a superior "A", 3rd and 4th gen boys are both superior to sires but still "A"s. 5th gen boy is a "Star". My mares have mostly been yellow-red-blue-blue for foundation through 4th gen. 5th gen girls are mostly "Blue" with a handful of "Gold"s.
My question is should I continue to breed the blue 5th gen girls along with the gold girls? Or stick to just the gold papered mares for 5th gen? How should I adjust/evaluate my othe generations to ensure the best breeding quality so I consistently get gold 5th gen?

I personally keep my 5th gen mixed between blue and gold, but keep only gold fillies form them. They all get pasture bred, so with a star stallion, a lot of their daughters who pass SBA papers gold.

In my mind my requirements is that I keep the top 2 paper levels of each generation until the top paper level becomes the majority then I’ll go through and snip the lower level.
But as I require all of my mares and studs to comparison test superior I know that the overall quality is improving so I rarely actually make it through my barns to compare paper levels so unless they are really a stand out (like yellow papered) then they stay but when I’m in a culling mood trying to squish my mares into their generations pasture I will snip a bunch of lower papers to fit the higher ones in.
When I cull I open each studs page and use the view foals search to compare the statistics of all his foals. I am trying to be more consistent about snipping the lower papered foals unless there’s something I really want on a lower papered mare (colts I try to only keep 3 per stud so lower papers get snipped quicker)Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
I have become very strict with my culling. This is how i am doing it for my new lines:
-Run everything through SBA (If you have it)
-Papers should be B/Red for foundation, A/Blue and Superior for 2nd and 3rd gen, and Star/Gold and superior for 4th gen and higher.
-Must be consistent
-For my chinchilla and mushroom lines, foals MUST be homozygous by third gen
-And lastly, they must follow this AFPT guideline from Ammit in 2016:
AFPT Score for mares (after 3 foals) and studs (after 10 foals):
- 9.9
- 2G 10.3
- 3G 10.7
- 4G 11.1
- 5G 11.6
- 6G and up 12 or higher
If any one of these is not met, they get an immediate snip. I very seldom save any for boosting or GMT'ing unless they are basically perfect otherwise. Because i am so strict, it does mean less intact foals per season, but the ones that i do keep are of topmost, exceptional quality, which is my ultimate goal.Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I run everything through SBA and compare testing. I keep only the ones that test superior.
Papers:
Foundation - Yellow/C, Red/B
2nd gen - Red/B superiors. Blue/A are welcome surprises but must be superior too.
3rd gen - Blue/A superiors
4th gen - Blue/A superiors. Gold/Star are welcome surprises, but must be superior too.
Note: I have gotten Star/Gold from Yellow/C stock, so it is entirely possible.
5th gen and higher- Gold/Star superiors.
Note: I've gotten to 8th gen so far.
AFPT scores:
Foundation - 9.9 (10+ preferred)
2nd gen - 10.5 preferred
3rd gen - 11 preferred
4th gen - 11.5 preferred
5th gen and higher - 12+ preferred

I start with B/Reds and by 4G I only keep Star stallions but will keep Blue superior fillies. By 5G I only Gold fillies intact.
-
Most of mine are Expro foundations and not producers but perfect, its only been since the Christmas herd helpers that I have yellow
Foundation - Yellow/B, Red/B
2nd gen - Red/A, Blue/A, Red/B (Sup to sire, sup to dam)
3rd gen - Blue/A superiors Red/A and depending if its a line that I really want Blue/B Red/B (sup to sire sup to dam)
4th gen - Blue/A superiors. Gold/Star are welcome surprises, but must be superior too.
5th gen and higher- Gold/Star superiors.
