PT vs Consistency
  • Okay, so I'm new at this and I'm trying to purge some show horses. This is my first generation, so my PT scores are all in the 9 to high 10 range. I'm for sure keeping the higher scores that are consistent. Where I'm getting caught up is deciding which is more important.

I have some that have lower scores (7-8), but are consistent, and I have some that higher scores (high 9 - 11), but are inconsistent. Which in the long run is better to keep? Or should I just purge both categories?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I looked through the last 10 pages and didn't see anything.
  • I myself always purge show horses with PT scores below 9. Above that, I generally keep all neuters regardless of consistency. However, I've been playing since 2011 and have a fairly large stable (over 4,000 horses). I also have a Premium upgrade, so I just put them in a barn that is set up to auto show and ignore them. I can understand that you may not have that option yet.

It's very hard to evaluate the worth of a show horse before it has leveled off and stopped adding points to its show score. For one thing, while it's showing at the lower levels where there are only a few horses in each class, luck has more to do with how quickly it will add points than either its PT score or its consistency/inconsistency. An inconsistent horse with lots of luck and scores that swing toward the high end of its range fairly often may actually place higher than a consistent horse that has the same base score.

I'd still suggest culling your horses with PT scores below 9 and giving the others at least a couple more week to see how they're doing.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't bother with consistency in show horses. The consistent ones are easier to evaluate, but as @SandyCreekAcres said, sometimes the inconsistent ones will throw a relatively great score & place above the rest.

I only worry about consistency in breeding stock, because it is somewhat heritable and inconsistency will lower the foals' PT scores.
  • Awesome, thank you! That should open up at least a few stalls.
