Spay or intact
-
Working with a new 2g S+ KP stud and crossed him on some of my red S+ mares. Resulting fillies in question have 2 kit & 1 KP gene but papered red and passed all testing. Genetically I like them. Just not sure if should spay them or keep them and breed them to an A paper stud when they age up. What would you do? Thoughts and opinions welcome. TIA.

My rule is when in doubt, always spay/geld.

i agree with above, when in doubt, get the snipping scissors out :))HJ1: 133971

You're talking about 3G mares, correct? For me personally, anything less than A/Blue by gen three is an automatic snip. I have too many horses to be keeping lower quality foals, even if they have nice genes.Spiderweb Stables

Thanks all. You voiced my initial thoughts. Ugh, self-doubt struck again. @SilverCreek lol. I love that little rhyme. @Taliesin yes, 3g mares. I don't have a lot of intacts that I breed but I do want to keep quality. Thanks again.

Also whenever posting questions about particular horses it’s always best to post a link (or the bit of code at the bottom of the horses page to show a picture too) so that we can answer questions more realistically rather than theoretically.
Personally I allow each paper level 3 generations to move up as long as they are comparison testing Superior. (Other than Yellow that is only allowed in foundation). For each genera I only keep the top 2 paper levels until I build up a good herd and start to get more of the higher papers then I’ll go through and snip the lower papered ladies.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
What is your 2G stallion? Is he A papered? If B papered is he superior to an exceptional B papered foundation? If not either then you are going to have trouble getting blue/A 3G. Not impossible, just uncommon. If all you got was red fillies, I'd compare them to their red dams and maybe keep the superior ones?

Once you get some blues, then you can spay the reds

When I started out, I kept 3rd gen red fillies until I started getting 3rd gen blues consistently, then I started weeding out the reds. Now I spay all 3rd gen fillies that paper red because I don't need them, I get more than enough blues to fill my pastures then some, and I started with C/yellow, then went B/Red for 2nd gen. The key is to keep only superior foals because those are the ones that will progress your lines in quality.
