DP Puzzles!
  • Thought you guys might appreciate following along with this 'puzzle' I did today. I found this filly in my pasture this morning:

    DP Puzzle Filly

Ooh look! A liver chestnut! From my champagnes! She's a Gen 3 and I didn't know there was DP anywhere in this line, so I went about ferreting it out. It was not clear from looking at her parents and grandparents and their offspring where that might have come from, so I did some test breeding.

    Here's her parents:

    LC2A Orraro
    - Sire

    LC2B Odessa
    - Dam
Both of them are het sooty gold champagnes, but I think Orraro looks darker, so that's where I started. I flushed this black liver mare and crossed them a few times

And the very first baby turned out to be a black liver just like her momma!

So yes, Orraro must have at least one copy of DP.
The second foal got his champagne, and the third is liver, but not black liver, and hom sooty:

So Orraro is het DP, which is exciting because he's my gen 2 stud for that line, which means half my gen 3's will statistically have DP :D

Now to figure out which parent he got it from...

  • Congratulations for both discovering a hidden DP carrier and doing the great detective work to find which horse it was.

  • Thanks! A little more detective work, and I've tracked it back another gen to the foundations. It came from this mare, Orraro's dam

Who threw this single sooty liver on her very first cross with Drakul

  • Have you seen the Facebook comments where it is stated that the size of the spots are related to the color and the darkening genes a horse may be carrying?

  • That’s my post :D

So I was going to say that the bigger spots on the sire are a potential DP clue. :)
  • Great sleuthing!

  • :-O What? What? No I hadn't seen that! At last, we have answers! I don't go on FB much because of my family, so thank you for linking that to me, blu!
I had noticed that my lines got darker and bigger spots at the same time, but I was seeing a correlation, not causation. I assumed it was because I started working for darker and bigger spots at more or less the same time, so the two would naturally both increase at the same time! This is amazing! DP on everything! ¡Viva la DP! That certainly explains why Drakul throws such big spots, too! There's got to be more to it, though, or variety within that, or something, because I've definitely gotten livers with little speckles too.
@paradoxphoenix, it's funny because Orraro displaced his predecessor for the spot of Gen 2 Champard Stud by having bigger spots than he did!
    Also, thanks everybody :)

  • @FlyingTurkeyFarm, isn't she though? I was hoping that one would pass testing! She's got a good PT though, so she'll stick around and be a pretty show pony
