wishing to learn pricing
  • How do all of you set prices on your horses or eggs/straws? Is there a baseline for certain fantasy genes? What about your regular horses that show potential but have no fantasy or super rare gene (satin, ax n)? Ive skimmed thru sales and some are really high, while others are super low even though they may have the same gene. Is that preference?

    Ty in advance!
  • Depending on the rarity/or real life price of a gene is how I try to price. If a horse has a bunch of fantasy genes, generally will be priced higher. Because of the love of DP on the game, liver horses also get an extra 5-20k on their purchase price. Same with snowflake or the big appy spots.

If I don't know how much to price something at, I sometimes do an auction instead and let the market determine price. There are often way overpriced horses on public sales board that occasionally get voted down.

Generally foundations with basic genes really aren't worth more than 2500 unless they have a lot of points and therefore can make more money by showing or just sitting in a barn earning show bonuses.

  • Yep I agree with Humboldt.

My 2G stud straws usually go for under 20k because most people have more lined horses then they know what to do with. Unless the genes are very highly sought after (DP/Snowflake/etc.) I don't usually share my closed genes but when I do they are usually a bit high for the lined one because I work hard to keep quality and want to know the people who have my straws give as much care as I do about my line. Also, most people prefer evenly bred horses, but uneven bred horses might sell well as show ponies :) But that's different for everyone, I'm not the best one to give advice on lined fantasy genes :))

As far as regular foundations go they are best to be sold for 2500hb OR their lifetime payout, sometimes if you do an auction on a horse that has a large number of points and is young (under 4) you can get a good price! And if that horse is a rank special or exceptional horse you might get more, but I would always hold a forum auction for that. Rank specials usually depend on the rank special. Rank specials that paper Red/B go for more than Yellow/C papered ones because they are better producers. If you rank special comes out with an unusual color (say a buckskin candy appleloosa) sometimes you can get a bit more as well.

Fantasy foundations I've seen go for as much as 50k a straw to 500k an egg depending on the genes. I can't use eggs so I'l focus on straws :) My fantasy straws for foundations usually go for 25k, that's my Splash M foundation that has had a lot of GMT work done on him and I keep his price on the high side because I don't offer many straws and want to know the people buying take care of my line. When I bred satin I offered my satin stud straws for 10k, seemed to do well, he was a B papered rank special so again, I could probably get a bit more. This next season I'll have a few fantasy studs coming of age, I'd probably ask about 20k for straws. But it's different for everyone.

Ok so I've rambled on a bunch, I hoped I helped and if you have any questions let me know or PM me!
