Long-term breeding as a free player?
-
Hello everyone!! I only joined here a little under three weeks ago, but I'm really loving this game so far, and the community has been really great and helpful with helping me learn the ropes.
I had some concerns about breeding, and also some questions -- Essentially, after reading a few user's forum posts, I began worrying about producing an increasing amount of gelded and spayed foals from my horses as time goes on until essentially all of my breeding herd just phases out entirely (unless I replace them with new stock).
Is this a genuine concern I should have? I've read that even breeding can help produce more intact foals -- Is this absolutely essential, or can I get along without it? If essential, is there an acceptable generation gap that would likely still produce majority intact foals (ie, second gen mares to a foundation stud)?
Also, should I be investing in comparison testing? I've been planning on testing my breeding herd, but this would take some time to save up for. Should I compare all my foundation horses to the "Foundation Horse" option, or if a founder tests superior should I compare against it?
I haven't yet, but I plan on putting my breeding herd to pasture for the next breeding season. The guides say that pastures open on the 7th, and automatically breed on the 14th -- Is manually breeding in the pasture an option between the 7th and 14th, or can I only place horses in at that point? Also, regarding the breeding bonus -- does that reach its maximum on the 30th day, or the 31st (and is there any indication of how long horses have been in pasture in the game)? For example, if I placed my horses in pasture on April 14th, would they have reached the full breeding bonus for foals bred 30 days later on May 14th?
I'm sure I may be misunderstanding a lot of core aspects of the game, so please correct me if I misinterpreted anything, and please send me any further tips for breeding you have! Thank you everyone!
Edit: I'm so sorry, I posted this to the wrong forum! Fixed now! :)Post edited by csartie at 2020-04-01 18:30:15 -
Hi Shizukuu! Welcome to the game!
I've read that even breeding can help produce more intact foals <-The more similar a mare and stallion papers and generation are, the better the foal they create will be as a breeding animal. It is not a guarantee, but it helps. This is because, when you test the foal it will need to be better than both of it's parents if it is going to remain intact. A lower generation and/or papered mare bred to a higher generation and/or papered stallion makes the gap between the mares lowest score, and the stallions highest score much bigger, so it is harder for the foal to be better than both. The closer the parents are, the smaller the gap. <br />
Also, should I be investing in comparison testing? If you are breeding for fancy colors it doesn't really matter. If you are breeding for show scores (PT) or breeding ability (paper level) then, yes, it is a HUGE help, but it is not essential.
Is manually breeding in the pasture an option between the 7th and 14th, or can I only place horses in at that point? <-You can breed them manually whenever you want to. To prevent that breeding on the 14th from happening just take the stallion out of the pasture. You can put him back in when you are ready to breed. The mares need to stay to keep their bonus.<br />
If I placed my horses in pasture on April 14th, would they have reached the full breeding bonus for foals bred 30 days later on May 14th? <-Yes<br />
It sounds like you are starting to get it figured out! You've made a good start! Let us know if you have any more questions!Post edited by ConfluenceStable at 2020-04-01 20:40:03

Thank you very much for your response!!
My only issue is, as a free/basic account (at the moment, anyway), I'm not able to paper my stock or access the SBA. I will try to stick to even breeding and hope for the best! I am breeding for PT and other variables, not so much colors, so I will definitely go ahead with the comparison testing. Thank you!
When you say "score" though, what exactly do you mean? Is this an actual number that I can see and compare, or is it something hidden away in coding, or a hypothetical...?
Thank you again for all of your help :) -

I am a player who has always had a basic upgrade account (as I cannot pay for a premium upgrade in real life).
I wanted to send you the money to buy a basic upgrade with IVs, but as your account is under 2 months old it cannot be done yet.
So could you put up a horse for sale that you don't want for 375000 hbs and post it here?
Then I'll buy that horse and you can transfer the hbs into 30 IV's, enough for 1 year basic upgrade! (You can buy the IVs and the upgrade on this page: https://www.huntandjump.com/member_exchange.php)
That way you can paper your horses.
I would recommend to be a bit hesitant about papering all your horses though in the beginning, as it can become a bit costly (1000 per papering of an intact horse). I've recently started with an account on the other server and what I did to save funds is only papered my own bred horses. Foundations are, if they pass breeding advice, always yellow papered, unless they are some kind of exceptional (exceptionally perfect, exceptional producer) or a herd helper that is exceptional. In that case foundations paper higher, as they are better breeders, and they will paper red.
The breeding score confluence talks about is a hidden number. Paper level reflects this a bit, but the real number itself is hidden. (A red papered mare is a better breeder (can produce better breeding and/OR showing horses) than a yellow papered mare. The same for studs, an A papered stud is a better breeder than a B papered stud. But with these paper levels there is always overlap. With breeding the breeding scores of the dam and sire are thrown in a mix and there is always a range of possible outcomes, both on breeding score of the foal as on the PT score of the foal.
This is also a helpful explanation about testing and the different 'scores' a horse can have (breeding [hidden], PT score [how long they will train] etc): https://www.huntandjump.com/faq.php#34
