A noob question from an old player (Points and Showing)
-
Getting around to culling a bunch of my horses ( i have too many :)) ) and
I've noticed some huge point differences in some of my horses.
Both of these horses are 15 years old, both are levelled off, both have been consistently shown since they were foals. They're both showing in 8L shows now as well.
https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=7941678 PT score of 10.4 and 2261 points
https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=7910596#tabs-3 PT score of 11.4 and only 236 points
I had a quick look in the FAQ but i don't know whether my brain is just tired, but I can't find what causes such a difference in points? Is it the higher PT or something else. Most of my lowest pointed 15 year olds have higher PTs than the higher pointed 15 year olds. Do the high PTs just get more points later in life? Or are they bad eggs and I need to cull them all XDHJ1: 133971 -
Hi, I'm quite new but looking at those two the higher PT shows badly (consistently not 1st/2nd place), whereas the lower PT always finishes top 2.
I'd cull the higher PT and any others who aren't consistently placing - past level off.HJ1: 266615

It also has to do with the show level they compete in. The second horse competes in 8L, and even although he places second he only earns 5 points (you can see that by clicking on his show result, then you can see how many points each place earns).
The first horse, with a lower PT, has just moved into the 8L class but has shown in the 7W class for a very long time. In the World classes there are more points to grab for each place.
If you look at this horse (https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=7885618) which shows in the 7W class you can see that a first place earns a whopping 32 points, and the 14th place (out of 17 entries) earns 6 points, which is more than the second place in the 8L class!
So whilst that higher PT fella is placing high in the ranks (1st/2nd/3rd) he is not earning much points because of the class he competes in (the 8 Local level). So I'd get rid of him and happily keep the 10.4 PT horse, even if she just moved into the 8L class and probably wont gain much points anymore she still has a lot of points to earn her keep.HJ1 160524

Oooh yes that makes sense, I didn't realise 7w classes got more points than the lower 8 classes! Time to get culling!
Thank you :DPost edited by SilverCreekFarm at 2020-04-28 01:10:24HJ1: 133971 -
Yes, that is what I have been finding. I love my 7W horses...my B/Red foundies give me tons of those show ponies.

so a newbie question follow up ; do the mares in the pasture contribute to your over all daily hb's? I know they don't gain points from showing but if they have points already?
-
Yes, @annismyrph, mares in pasture contribute to daily hbs. They can't show, but they do train.
-
I can't think of a situation where horses could ever lose accumulated points, or where those points wouldn't count towards the nightly bonus. Even if your barns are full or over filled the consequence is that you can't show, the points won't increase, but they aren't lost.

I have noticed the same, and I have started to cull the 11-11.5-pt horses already as foals, since they often level out in bad places. There are probably many who does not, but I noticed the trend in my barn, and also saw that they are outperformed by 10.5's, in accumulated points.
That is why exceptional or perfect foundations creeated with 250+ points are so valuable to me. I would rather have them in my barn instead of horses with higher PT, but who level out in bad places, without earning much points on the way up either.
