Comparison Testing Exceptional Foundations
-
Me again with more discussions! I am having fun experimenting/theorizing about maximized breeding abilities for a new project.
So: I recently saw a mare who was a Red-papered foundation (from one of the exceptional Herd Helpers). In her notes the owner had written that she tested "AAGA Foundation Horse" implying she'd been tested against the foundation standard. I never even thought to do this because I assumed that all Red/B papered foundies would comparison test as "superior" to the baseline since they are exceptional foundies. I do understand that sometimes a horse that is a paper level above its parent can test only AAGA, since they may be at the "bottom" of their paper level while the parent may be at the "top". For some reason I just assumed this wasn't the case for the HH foundies. However, keeping this in mind, I suppose I could comparison test all of my Exceptional foundations to the foundation standard to find out which ones (if any) are Superior, making them better Red/B papered breeding stock than the ones that test AAGA. That would be a quicker (albeit very expensive upfront #:-S ) way to find out who my best breeders are instead of waiting several months to compare AFPTs.
This is speculation on a subject which I imagine many of you have already thought about, but since it was a new idea to me I thought I would post about here. Have any of you done this to weed through foundation horses of the same paper level to try and find the highest quality out of the bunch? I am really tempted to do it but not sure I have enough cash on hand :))
Might be a long term goal! -
We must have been looking at the same breeder! I did notice but as a new player I don't have the resources (or mares to be this strict)
I've culled down to 25 breeding mares, around 40% are red papered and the rest meet a strict colour & PT benchmark.
In my foals and in future projects I may also try this method though. :)HJ1: 266615

The comparison test result, About As Good As, covers a range that extends from Slightly Worse Than through As Good As to Slightly Better Than. Keeping in mind that the best ordinary creates are C/Yellow papered, the Red papered mare you started with would fall in the Slightly Better Than range. I would guess that her breeding score would be 101-102%, just a bit above the 100% of a Perfect Foundation.
