Need Advice on Setting Benchmarks (Closed)
-
I’ve been seeing in a lot of forum posts that people have been setting benchmarks for their breeding programs. I’m new, and was wondering if I could have some advice on setting benchmarks. Maybe how you decide how high to set it?
How much hbs do you receive if you sell your horse back to the game?Post edited by KittyPeri14 at 2020-05-07 14:57:09•My Now Projects•

Sell back to the game gives you 1000 hbs, I believe.
I haven't used benchmarks much but here's a example of how it starts for breeding ability, to the best of my knowledge.
Let's say that you start out breeding a few C papered perfect foundation stallions to a group of Yellow papered perfect foundation mares. Compare the B papered colts to their sire and geld any that test only about as good as, since they will be lowish B's. Compare the red papered fillies to their dams and again only keep those that test superior to dam.
Step 2. Let's say you have five B papered sons that test superior to their papered foundation sire. Let's name them 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e.
Compare 2a with 2b. If they test about as good as each other, leave both intact for now. However if one of them, let's say 2b, is superior, neuter 2a and continue.
Compare 2b with 2c. If they test about as good as, leave both intact. If one tests superior to the other, neuter the one that's worse. Let's say 2b came out ahead again.
Compare 2b with 2d. Once again, if they are about as good as, leave both intact. However, let's say that 2d tests superior to 2b. Keep him intact and neuter both 2b and 2a, if still intact.
Follow the same procedure for 2e, comparing him to any intact brothers.
Run down the foals of the other sires in this manner and then comparison test them with each other, regardless of sire.
Then you can run through comparing the fillies with their dams and each other in the same manner.
The best one of the still intact fillies and colts to be the "benchmark" for next year's foundation breeding.
When it comes to PT scores, players set a certain PT score that they want for their foals, based on the generation, and neuter any that fall below that.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. If anyone has a different method and wants to share it, feel free to still post it here!Post edited by KittyPeri14 at 2020-05-04 20:58:14•My Now Projects•

I will say, Kitty, comparison testing horses is fairly expensive, especially for a new account. It's 4k with a premium upgrade, and 8k without. Benchmarking requires a lot of testing, and it may not be financially feasible for several months. I get a daily payout of 75,000 hbs - I would be able to do 9 tests a day if I had no other expenses (like breeding or showing). I'm not saying don't do it - it just eats through your income quickly, especially when you're starting out.
I would recommend first looking at paper levels - not keeping a second generation C colt if you have a B colt, for example, as that is much more affordable for newer accounts. Paper testing is 1k hbs per intact. It's not as precise or powerful as benchmarking against a single horse, but you can get a lot more mileage out of it in the lower generations.
(Also, a general tip - it's good practice to make your post title related to the content - it will help people know if they can help/should click through to the body, and helps keep there being many posts titles "A question" or "Two Questions" or even "Horse for Sale".)Post edited by ChateauAlbere at 2020-05-05 09:03:41 -
I don't like to spend the amounts needed for mass comparison testing so I use strict breeding advice, paper level, consistency and which foal the email you get when breeding pasture says is the best to go from there.

as a newer account ; I start with Breeding Advice ; Geld or Spay ; if they don't pass since they have no points ; they get yummed
I then do PT scores ; if they don't hit 10 ; they get yummed
Lastly I do genetics ; if they are not the color / genetics of what I am looking for again ; yummed
at the end of the month I then go through all the boys ; and see which one I like the look of best and THEN paper it and compare it to Daddy. Mares I am hanging on to since they can be pasture bred if for nothing but the Yum fee -
I mainly use B/Red foundation horses with the exception of my Cherry Drop Project..
all foals are put through SBA, color testing and comparison testing with the exception of 2nd gen A/Blue papered foals... Any B/Red papered foals have to compare AGA a 2nd gen A/Blue papered horse.
3rd gen have to be A/Blue and test superior to their sire/dam and so on... anything that doesn't meet all marks, gets snipped regardless of how pretty they are..
I also try to stay away from Boosted lines... the only Boosted horse I currently have is a Freaky Friday mare boosted 5% to an exceptionally perfect breeding ability level..
I also have been trying not to buy lined horses from outside lines and if I do, I ask the seller to compare the horse to another that would meet the standards I've started for my herds..
Since doing this, I've gotten 4 Star/Gold papered babies in the last 2 seasons within 4 generations... I've been playing for a year and a half now and I feel like if I had done this to begin with, I wouldn't have wasted so many resources trying to keep horses that were lesser quality...Post edited by LEAcres at 2020-05-06 20:26:41 -
@annismyrph if you'd like an unsolicited recommendation, sending foals to auction generates more income than selling them back to the game. It takes a few extra days, but it might be worth it.

Thank you all for the different benchmark methods! I believe now I’ll be able to figure out the best way to set benchmarks without burning through hbs quickly!•My Now Projects•
