  • How do you breed the mares, and what age are they able to be bred?
  • Mares need to be 4 years old and stallions need to be 3 years lot to breed.
You can only breed them during the breeding season which starts on 28th of this month. If you put them in your pasture you will see a comment telling you how many breedable mares you have in there. There is also a button that says 'breed my pasture' if you click that your horses breed and you will get a foal listed at the bottom of the page.
  • Actually, the breeding season ENDS on the 28th. Read this recent updated link reguarding the breeding season.

  • Actually, the breeding season ends on the 28th. That is, you can breed through the 27th of the month.

In H&J 1, each game year lasts 2 real-life months. Breeding seasons/years start in January, March, May, July, September and November. Ammit has just increased the breeding season to run through both months of the game year, so it will end on the 28th of February, April, June, August, October and December.

Outside of pasture breedings, either the stallion or the mare must be put up for public stud/brood. You set the price for that on the Control Panel, where you will find a place to do so during breeding seasons. If you have put a stallion up for stud, go to his Horse Info page. There will be a button at the bottom "Breed to this horse." Click that. The breeding panel will open up at the top of his page. You will see a drop down box that lists all your breedable mares and a text-box for the name of the foal. All foals must be named before the breeding can be done, but it is fine if you enter a place-holder name and change it after the foal is born. Click the "Create Foal" button. The foal will appear almost immediately, unless you have chosen a name that is already in use. If no foal appears, enter a new name, make sure to reset to the mare you intend to breed, and try again.

If you don't have your own stallion, go to Search Horses, select Stallion as the gender and For Breeding in the upper left Status section. Selecting "Breeding Price" under Basic Sort will bring up the ones with the lowest stud fees first. If you are breeding a foundation mare, select "Foundation" under Status in the lower mid-section. To breed lined mares, select "Lined" instead. There is no way to select for specific lined generations, though, so be careful to match the generations of both stallion and mare manually.

Stallions can do up to 50 live-covers per breeding year. Mares can only be bred once, unless you are upgraded enough to pull and use eggs.

  • Actually the 28th is the end of breeding season (as of Ammit's recent announcement http://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/4304/official-change-in-breeding-season-times#Item_15.) Breeding seasons (and game years) last 2 months. They start at the beginning of January, March, May, July, September, and November. The game owner and administrators start breeding on the 1st to be sure there are no buggs, upgraded members receive a start time on the 2nd, and everyone else gets a start time on the 3rd. It used to be that breeding season only lasted until the 28th of the first month of the game year, but that has just been changed.

There are 3 ways to breed your mares.

The cheapest is pasture breeding which costs 500hb in vet bills to produce each foal. You must own your own mare(s) and stallion. Go to your pasture, use the drop lists to put the horses in it and click the "Breed All Your Pastures" button. If you leave your mares in the pasture before breeding them they get a cumulative breeding bonus for each day they are in the pasture before breeding (up to 30 days after which the bonus tops out). When a foal is bred the game uses a secret formula which combines the breeding abilities of the parents with a random factor twice to determine the training and breeding ability of the foal. The pasture breeding bonus increases the chance that the random factor will be favorable, producing foals at the top end of the range for the cross.

Next is live cover which costs 1000hbs for the vet bill plus the stud fee. For this you only need to own 1 parent and can find plenty of horses available for pubic stud or brood (many with very low stud fees) using the horse search. There is a "Breed to this Horse" button at the bottom of the Horse Info page of horses which are available for stud. When you click it it will bring up a drop box with all the horses you own that are available to breed to it. Pick one, name the foal, and click the "Create Foal" button. If you are using your own mare and stallion, you will need to put one of them up for public stud using the "Set Breeding Fee" button on the horse's Control Panel. You must have enough money in you account to cover the fee even though it will be deposited back to you. If you set the fee very low it is best to put your stallion public since stallions can have 50 live cover (and/or pasture) foals per year, while mares can only have 1 foal each year, in case someone else breeds to you horse before you.

The third method of breeding is artificial insemination (AI) and is one of the features available to level 3 and higher upgraded accounts.
