[Small Vent] Not having any luck with Liver line
-
Last month I created a liver/chocolate line and did various test breedings to make sure I had the right horses. I destroyed the foals to do some further GMT work and have tried again this month only to be incredibly disappointed in the offspring.
So far out of 9 foals, all but 1 got snipped and the one that didn't is AGA to her dam (although she did get all possible genes from both parents). When I breed B studs to Yellow dams I get a much higher passing rate and slightly higher PT too, did I just get super unlucky?
I still have a few more mares sat in the pasture waiting for the auto breeding day (they need to accumulate more bonus) and I hope to have better news at the end of the month with at least one foal I can post in the celebration thread from this line.
Thank you for reading. =))

B should be bred to Red ; were the mares in pasture for at least 15 days? am also wondering if he is a Low grade B ; have you checked him against another B?
and unless I am completely mistaken ; Liver like Brindle is Extremely difficult to breed forPost edited by annismyrph at 2020-06-05 05:42:55 -
I feel your pain. I’ve been using embryo transfer and something like 95% were snipped and those that made it were only AGA!

@annismyrph all you need for liver is 3 darkening genes (Sty and DP) + chestnut base.
The FAQs have a good graphic figure to demonstrate!

@annismyrph I was getting good results doing similar pairings from my other two lines last month as tests (that's when I chose all of my mares but wasn't sure I was done with GMT), getting Superior Blue and A’s from AI with obviously the majority being B/Red, and a couple of Yellows. These one's were also bed through AI so I'm just not sure why these were so different.
The stud is a C but the other pairings had one parent as this level too. I don't have a suitable stallion to test him against as my lower papered foundations are all mares. If it's just because he is a C I will not use C them in future - as I have had some great luck with Yellow mares and have no high C stallion to test him against.
Ooh no in regard to colour I meant Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino since all of the mares I chose will throw one or the other.Post edited by DarkFrost at 2020-06-05 06:22:38HJ1: 266615

Well you're breeding a C stud to red papered mares. Red mares are a step higher in terms of breeding ability than a C papered stud. It goes like this for studs: C - B - A - *Star and for mares Yellow - Red - Blue - *Gold. So as your stud has a lower breeding ability than the mares, it is much harder to get a foal that is somewhat around the breeding ability of the dam (and thus good enough to pass Breeding Advice to stay intact).
Imagine this: the C stud has a breeding ability of about 100%. Let's say the range of breeding 'points' he can give his offspring is something from 95 - 105. A red mare has a breeding ability of about 105%, so her range could be 100 - 110 (this is just as an example, the numbers are completely hidden and only Almighty Ammit knows exactly how the breeding system works and what the numbers are behind it!).
If he 'gives' his offspring a score of 100 and the mare of 105, that combines into 102. That is below mom so therefore it will not pass. The odds of getting an intact are much lower as their breeding abilities are so much apart. For a foal to pass Breeding Advice it needs to be about as good as both parents (see https://www.huntandjump.com/faq.php#34). So while this example foal is still better than sire in terms of breeding score, it is not about as good as dam and therefore gets spayed.
What I experienced myself is that breeding yellow pasture mares to B papered studs gets more intact offspring, as they have a pasture bonus and thus a 'maximum' score. A stud however cannot get a pasture bonus so cannot 'improve' it's score. Still, you should get more luck with putting your boy in the pasture.
Another thing you could do with a younger c papred stud is giving a 1% breeding boost (can be bought with RL money or via IVs). That way he improves his breeding ability a bit and thus is closer to the ability of your red papered mares. Unfortunately this guy you've bred with is too old, a breeding boost can only be given to an unbred horse of 4 years or younger.
Oh and after all it is mostly luck: some season you are more lucky than others. Heck, even some days are better than others! It is a gamble or a roll with 2 dices so the only thing you can do is try to get that pasture bonus on your mares and thus increase your odds for getting better offspring.Post edited by MasterStablesMS at 2020-06-05 06:26:18HJ1 160524

@Master StablesMS Unfortunately, he was older than 4 when I got him, but he's much cheaper than me making a Liver Chestnut stud for myself. I did test breedings with most of these pairs last 'year' and was getting much better foals overall so I am aware of what they can produce, although I did see a small difference between these pairings and those of my other two stallions. I know that this is because studs can't get the pasture bonus. Just disappointed with what has been thrown so far as it doesn't match my test standard.
I've still got 5 pairs to breed in this line and a couple of those mares will be close to max bonus (which exceeds what I tested with) so I am still hopeful I'll get at least one superior that I can keep. :DHJ1: 266615

I have a B papered Liver foundation stud if you would like him (: he’s ten but he’s still GMTable

And I’m not sure what your breeding goals are but I also have this A papered even 3rd gen hom DP boy that you’re welcome to as well :)

It's not impossible to get intact foals out of C x Red crosses. Just more difficult.
I love getting colts from C X Red crosses, they have better odds of testing superior to their sires.Post edited by Forestshadow at 2020-06-05 11:56:34 -
Thank you @Beezy sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet, I am still only working with foundations at the moment and I really appreciate the offer for the Song of Sleipnir as he's a lovely horse but I don't have the GMT's to spend to give him the extra genes he needs. :(( I'll continue working with what I have as I only need a couple, this is my smallest and cheapest line anyway.
both of your boys are stunning, I hope you find a new home for them (if you are selling).HJ1: 266615

If you leave those mares in the pasture the full 30 days, you should absolutely be able to get intact foals. You probably just had a run of bad luck! Happens to everyone.
Personally I prefer breeding C or Yellow horses to Bs or Reds, because even if you get fewer foals passing breeding advice, the ones that shouldn't paper C or Yellow themselves. Since papering costs 1000, and BA is free, it saves a bit of money.
Also, you will occasionally get Blue/A foals from pasture breedings like this! Always a nice surprise.
Hang in there! It always takes a while to get a line going the way you want.Post edited by SherwoodStables at 2020-06-08 14:15:36 -
No worries! I wish you the best of luck with your herd :D
