Culling out the Show Herds - What do you do?
-
I'd like to cut out the junk in my show herd. I've never done it, I feel like I have the correct idea about consistent vs. inconsistent and show record results. But then I have horses that don't do great in shows, they're older and prime time to auction for a little extra mullah before they go to horse heaven BUT they are throwing a 200+hb daily rate!!!??? It's hard to part with that horse, it's gonna take a huge chunk out of my daily rate.
What do you do? How do you choose the good vs the throw aways? Is it worth tossing the horse now, to make room for one that will do better overall later? Do you have an age cuttoff, like if they haven't done 500 total pts by age 5, cull?Projects:

I don’t normally cull show horses. But I have the room to keep them.
In the past when I would cull them I would open the search page and work through each age group (starting with the oldest) sort by total points. Jump to the last page and cull the last few horses and move on to the next age.
I only cull those who have leveled off (most often around the time when the horses age reaches its PT Score) so I only look through my 9-10+ year olds.
For the horses under 9 years old I run another search sorting by PT and look though the ones who’ve leveled off and cull those that have been staying in the low end of the classes unless they have a good show bonus (which you should get a good idea of what’s good or not from going through all the other age brackets)
You really don’t know whether a horse is going to be a good show horse or not until they’ve been a good show horse or not.
I don’t like inconsistency in my breeding stock but in a show horse it can be an advantage as if all things considered 2 horses are equal but one is consistent and the other inconsistent, the inconsistent ones inconsistency may swing up enough to beat the consistent one in a class.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
My method is the same as @Bandit1119
But if you need to cull to free up stable space, here is what I would do in addition. Always look for a trade that will give you more hbs pr stable in the long run.
I would trade underperforming old show horses for young horses created with points from new members. It is easy to find horses created with 200+ points, and they have their entire life to gain even more points, so the are worth more hbs pr stable than a 13 year old with 250 point. Look for perfect or exceptional herd helpers.
If you are lucky, you can find foundations created with 500+ points on the sales board, that will make you able to sell back 2 of your older horses without loosing your daily income, and free up a stable place as well!
You don't need to do a big cull in one day, you can do it slowly, by trading low quality stock with higher quality when you find something interesting, and think long term.
In the auction today, you will find foals with PT score of 13+
They will not earn you much during the next 5 or so months, but if you stick to them, they will start to come close to 1000 points when they are 10-11 year old, and they will still be around for at least 6 more months to gain even more points and give you a good income.
If you can trade in a couple of low PT-foals with high PT-foals, then you will probably make a very good trade

There are also a lot of horses for auction with many points that are under 10 year old. That means that their starting bid is 2500 hbs.
Take a look and see what you have and compare it to what you can get. That will hopefully give you a more clear guide to what you should do.

I have had a lot of success with keeping all my foals. I don't cull based on PT because a lot of good showers have a PT of 10. I do spay and geld a lot because I am picky with my breeding stock. At least 3 times throughout the month, I use the search feature to filter my show horses over 10 years old. I sort them by points earned this year. I go to the last page of the search and send all the poor showers to auction. They have peaked in a cruddy spot and arent earning much more. Bg sending them to auction, I still get their lifetime payout. This makes room for new foals coming in. Currently my show bonus is 325k and it still increases.
